Fukuda Art Museum

4.3 (1205)Art MuseumMuseumPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Fukuda Art Museum is a private art museum located in the Saga-Arashiyama district of Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, which opened in October 2019. It was founded by Fukuda Yoshitaka, a Kyoto-born businessman and owner of the consumer finance company Aiful, as an act of gratitude toward his home city. The museum was built around his personal collection of approximately 2,000 works of Japanese art, with the stated ambition of becoming "an art museum that lasts for 100 years." In 2023, it was named one of TIME Magazine's World's Greatest Places.

The Arashiyama area has served as a source of artistic and cultural inspiration since the Heian period (794–late 12th century), when it was a retreat for Kyoto's imperial aristocracy. The museum taps directly into this heritage by focusing on painters associated with the Kyoto art world, from the Edo period (1603–1868) through the modern era. Its collection includes works by major masters such as Ito Jakuchu, Maruyama Okyo, Takeuchi Seiho, Uemura Shoen, Yokoyama Taikan, and Takehisa Yumeji — many of which are displayed publicly for the first time.

Rather than a permanent collection on fixed display, the museum rotates its holdings through four special exhibitions per year, meaning each visit offers a different selection of works. The gallery rooms are designed to resemble traditional Japanese kura (storehouses) and feature custom-made glass cases by German specialist GLASBAU HAHN, engineered for over 90% transparency with minimal seams — allowing visitors to examine brushwork and fine detail up close. A garden basin serves as a "water mirror" reflecting the surrounding Arashiyama landscape.

General admission is ¥1,500 for adults and university students, ¥900 for high school students, and ¥500 for elementary and junior high school students. By rail, the museum is reachable via the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama Station (approximately 10–15 minutes' walk), or via the Randen Line to Randen-Arashiyama Station (approximately 10 minutes' walk).

What other travelers are saying about Fukuda Art Museum

The museum focuses on Japanese-style painting (nihonga) spanning the Edo period to the modern era, with around 1,800 works centred on the Kyoto circle of painters.

Exhibitions are rotated 3 to 4 times per year. The full collection is never displayed at once, so the selection of works on view changes with each new exhibition.

Yes. The café "Bread, Espresso, and the Fukuda Art Museum" is inside the museum and open only to paying visitors. It overlooks the Oi River, Togetsukyo Bridge, and the Arashiyama mountains.

The museum maintains an indoor temperature of 22–25°C to protect the artworks, so visitors are advised to bring a layer of warm clothing. Large bags must be deposited at the front desk cloakroom, and only pencils are permitted for note-taking inside the galleries.
