Frequently Asked Questions

Yamagata is famous for its hot springs (onsen), ski resorts like Zao Onsen, and its connection to traditional Japanese culture. The region is also well-known for producing high-quality cherries, rice, and sake, as well as the Yamadera Temple.

Zao Onsen is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts and ski destinations. In winter, it’s known for its "snow monsters" (trees covered in thick snow and ice) and offers skiing and snowboarding. In other seasons, visitors can enjoy the hot springs, hiking, and beautiful mountain scenery.

The best time to visit Yamagata depends on your interests. Winter (December-February) is ideal for skiing and hot springs at Zao, while autumn (September-November) is perfect for enjoying the beautiful fall foliage, especially at Yamadera. Spring (March-May) offers cherry blossom viewing.

Yamagata is famous for its high-quality cherries (called "Satonishiki"), imoni (a taro and beef stew often eaten in autumn), and soba noodles. The prefecture is also known for producing fine rice, which is used to make top-tier sake.

The Yamagata Hanagasa Festival is one of the city’s biggest events, held in early August. It features a lively parade with dancers performing the traditional hanagasa dance. The Zao Juhyo Festival in winter celebrates the snow monsters, with light-ups and events around the frozen trees.
