Akita International University Nakajima Memorial Library

4.8 (81)LibraryServicePoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Nakajima Memorial Library at Akita International University stands as one of Japan's most architecturally striking academic libraries, located in the capital city of Akita Prefecture in northern Japan's Tohoku region. The library is a composite structure of timber and reinforced concrete with a unique semicircular design not seen anywhere else in the country: the theme is the "Book Coliseum." Constructed using Akita prefecture's native cedar extensively throughout the building, this award-winning structure represents a perfect fusion of local craftsmanship and modern design.

The library's cultural significance extends beyond its architectural merit, serving as a symbol of international education in rural Japan. This beautiful building has won awards such as the Good Design Award and the International recognition, while the venue has won a number of awards including the Murano Prize. The design incorporates traditional Japanese woodworking techniques with contemporary library functionality, creating a space that celebrates both local heritage and global learning.

Visitors experience a truly unique atmosphere within the semicircular "Book Coliseum" design, where books packed tightly from floor to ceiling are stunning and create an immersive literary environment. The traditionally crafted umbrella-shaped wooden structures and the dramatic curved interior provide exceptional photographic opportunities and a meditative study environment. This library, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, never sleeps and always welcomes the students. The building's complex structure with unique design that combines wood creates an inspiring space for contemplation and learning.

The university campus is situated in a rural environment approximately 10 minutes by car to access Akita Airport, making it easily accessible for travelers. Bus between AIU and JR stations provides public transportation connections, while Bus services provide connections to Aeon Mall Akita. The library is located adjacent to Akita Prefectural Central Park, offering visitors the opportunity to explore recreational facilities and natural surroundings. Most of AIU's buildings are connected by indoor walkways, allowing people to easily navigate the campus regardless of weather conditions. As an academic facility, admission policies may vary, and visitors should contact the university directly to arrange access for non-students.

Best library one can possibly wish to study. Gorgeous wooden 'toshokan' inspired by the local Akita architecture. Plenty of literature available as well.
