Chuzenji Temple stands on the eastern shore of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, at an elevation of approximately 1,269 meters. Founded in 784 by the Buddhist monk Shodo Shonin, who also established the sacred sites of Nikko, the temple belongs to the Tendai sect of Buddhism and has served as a mountain retreat for religious practice for over twelve centuries. The temple's name derives from the lake itself, which Shodo Shonin discovered during his ascetic training in these mountains.

The temple's most significant treasure is the Tachi-ki Kannon, a standing statue of the Buddhist deity of mercy carved from a single judas tree trunk. According to tradition, Shodo Shonin himself created this statue, making it over 1,200 years old. The approximately 6-meter-tall golden image is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and remains the principal object of worship. The statue's serene expression and graceful form exemplify early Heian period Buddhist sculpture.

Visitors approach the temple through a peaceful forested path that enhances the spiritual atmosphere of this mountain sanctuary. The main hall, reconstructed after a fire, houses the sacred Kannon statue and offers a contemplative space for prayer and reflection. The temple grounds provide excellent views of Lake Chuzenji, particularly striking during autumn when surrounding forests display vibrant fall colors. A small museum on the premises displays religious artifacts and provides context about the temple's history and Shodo Shonin's role in establishing Nikko as a center of mountain Buddhism.

Chuzenji Temple is located in the Chuzenji Onsen area, accessible by bus from Nikko Station or Tobu-Nikko Station. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes via the winding Irohazaka Winding Road. From the bus stop at Chuzenji Onsen, the temple is a 5-minute walk. Admission costs 500 yen for adults. The temple can be visited year-round, though winter brings heavy snow to this mountainous region.

What other travelers are saying about Chuzen-ji Temple

Beautiful and grand temple of Nikko. Located on the mountain, you need to climb some steps up. But the scenery is totally worth it. Some parts of the temple requires ticket purchase, but I am sure it will be a good exposure

Visited 23 October 2025: So peaceful and quiet! Lovely temple, but be prepared for quite a few stairs to get to the top. Worth it for the views of the lake though.

Chūzen-ji Temple, founded around 784 by the monk Shōdō, is a serene and spiritually historic spot nestled on the shores of Lake Chuzenji. It beautifully combines Tendai Buddhist reverence with mountain worship traditions, deeply rooted in the natural landscape of Nikko. When I visited, I bought amulets personalized with my name monks pray with these for a designated period and crystal beads that are ritually “charged” for you. There’s also a spiritual tradition here linked to Shugendō, which merges Buddhism, mountain worship, and esoteric practices , though Chūzen-ji remains primarily a Buddhist temple rather than a Shugendō site. It felt deeply moving and authentic.
