Hanzaki Center, Maniwa

4.3 (314)Tourist AttractionMuseumPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Hanzaki Center in Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture, is dedicated to the Japanese Giant Salamander, a creature designated as a special natural monument of Japan. The name "hanzaki" comes from local folklore claiming the salamander remains alive even if its body is cut in half, reflecting the deep cultural connection between this endangered species and the region. The center serves as both an educational facility and conservation site for these ancient amphibians found in the rivers around Yubara Onsen.

The Japanese Giant Salamander represents one of the world's largest amphibians and a living link to prehistoric times. The center houses specimens ranging from young salamanders to those exceeding 1 meter in length, offering visitors a rare opportunity to observe these protected creatures up close in conditions resembling their natural habitat. Display panels detail the salamander's biology, habitat requirements, breeding patterns, and historical significance to the Yubara area. The facility also features preserved specimens and skeletal displays that illustrate the salamander's anatomy and life cycle.

Visitors can view live giant salamanders in large observation tanks that simulate river conditions. The center connects the salamanders' history with their association to Yubara Onsen, explaining how these creatures have been woven into local legends and traditions for centuries. An outdoor garden complements the indoor exhibits, providing additional space for exploration. The facility has been recently renovated to improve the viewing experience, though English translations of informational signage may still be limited.

The Hanzaki Center is located at 1515 Toyosaka, Maniwa City, Okayama Prefecture. The center is approximately 10 minutes by car from Yubara IC on the Yonago Expressway. For those using public transportation, visitors can take a bus from JR Chugoku Katsuyama Station using the Maniwa City Community Bus service to reach Yubara Onsen, followed by a short journey to the center. Free parking is available on site, and admission to the center is free. The facility can be combined with a visit to nearby Yubara Onsen hot springs for a complete day trip experience.

So amazing to see these rare and beautiful creatures in person, small facility, but irreplaceable if you are interested in seeing a hanzaki or if you are interested in the folklore behind the kappa.

My original destination was Hiruzen Plateau, but I really wanted to visit this place, so I made a detour. It's near Yubara Onsenkyo, but the location is a little hard to find, and the building is rather small, but it's quite impressive for a facility that's free to enter. There were three or four small tanks, each containing one salamander, and I could see one (probably) in a large circular tank. I was thrilled to see the giant salamander in the circular tank moving around. They also have other exhibits such as documents and specimens. It was well worth the detour.

I stopped by Yubara Onsen. It was my first time to take the time to look at a giant salamander, and it was fascinating. I also learned more about Hamanzaki Daimyojin Shrine. The exhibition hall is small, so you can finish looking around quickly, but I ended up staying longer than I expected lol
