The Hida River flows through the mountainous region of Gifu Prefecture, stretching over 200 kilometers. It starts from the northern Japanese Alps and winds its way through the picturesque landscapes of Takayama and Gero. Known for its clear waters, the river has been a lifeline for the region, supporting agriculture, fishing, and transportation for centuries.

One of the river’s highlights is the Ukai, or traditional cormorant fishing, which has been practiced for over 1,300 years. This method, where trained cormorants catch fish under the guidance of skilled fishermen, attracts many visitors during the summer months.

The Hida River also played a crucial role in the development of the surrounding towns. Its waters powered waterwheels and mills, contributing to local industries such as sake brewing and woodworking. The riverbanks are dotted with historic shrines and temples, adding to its cultural significance.

Today, the Hida River is a popular spot for outdoor activities like rafting and fishing. It’s a place where history, culture, and nature intersect, offering a glimpse into the traditional way of life in the Japanese countryside.

What other travelers are saying about Hida River

The Hida River is a clear stream that originates from Mount Norikura and flows south through Gifu Prefecture before joining the Kiso River. Its basin includes Takayama City, Gero City, and Shirakawa Town, and its landscape, dotted with gorges, hot springs, and oddly shaped rocks, is filled with tranquility and power, like a sumi-e painting. In Hisuikyo Gorge, Byobuiwa Rock and other rock formations tower, while in Nakayama Shichiri, the river weaves through a deep valley, reflecting the changing seasons on its surface. Hot springs, including Gero Onsen, are dotted along the river, soothing travelers both physically and mentally. Sweetfish fishing and mountain stream fishing are also popular, and you can see local people living in harmony with nature. The flow of the Hida River is imbued with the memories of the land and quiet times, and I believe it resonates deeply with travelers like Takeru, who value space and quiet.

A beautiful river that will cleanse your soul! The Hida River is a truly healing spot where the beauty of nature remains intact. The flow of the river is pure, and just listening to the sound of the water calms the soul. Especially in the mornings and evenings, the light reflects off the water's surface, creating a fantastic atmosphere. The contrast with the surrounding mountains is stunning, and you can enjoy the scenery of each season. The fresh greenery in spring, the autumn leaves in autumn, and the snowy scenery in winter are all beautiful, so you'll be impressed no matter what season you visit. It's perfect for walks and photography, and is highly recommended for those who want to experience nature in a quiet environment. It was a place I'd like to go back to!
The view is spectacular. The river is a mysterious green.
The view of the river here when the leaves change color in autumn is an unforgettable sight. I recommend you visit when the leaves are at their best. The water in the river is also very clear, so the autumn leaves really stand out.
I traveled to Kamiaso. The Hidaka River around the station is a beautiful emerald green river, and you can even see hot holes.
