Hikaru Museum is a unique cultural and educational spot that catches the eye with its distinct architecture. The museum’s stone exterior, designed to evoke the grandeur of a Mesoamerican pyramid, sets it apart from the typical surroundings and invites curiosity.

Inside, visitors are treated to a diverse range of exhibits that span both art and history. The museum showcases an impressive collection of Japanese art, including intricate paintings, ukiyo-e prints, and traditional crafts that reflect the region's rich cultural heritage. For younger visitors, the museum offers engaging displays featuring lifelike dinosaur models, fossil replicas, and actual fossils discovered in the nearby Hida area, making it an exciting and educational experience for children.

Beyond the indoor exhibits, Hikaru Museum also features a Noh theater and outdoor exhibition spaces, allowing visitors to explore different facets of Japanese culture and history in a single location.

What other travelers are saying about Hikaru Museum

A hidden gem! I don’t think this is widely known or advertised. This museum is such an interesting architecture and has the entire Hokusai views of Mount Fuji. Did you know there is actually 46 instead of the original 36? It was very fun to walk around, very humbly priced at 1000 yen. If you have children there is dinosaurs exhibition that is interactive with stamp stations. A definitely must go if you have time on your trip! They apparently change some of their exhibits every 3 months or so.

In most of my research about Takayama, this museum hardly came up, and honestly, it is a hidden gem that few talk about. Designed in a pyramid shape, inspired by Mexico, the museum is gigantic, and there I saw a beautiful exhibition. One of the highlights was the exhibition featuring works that referenced Mount Fuji, reminiscent of the great master Katsushika Hokusai (famous for the 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' series). The contrast between the museum's modern architecture and its collection of Japanese art and historical artifacts is fascinating. It is absolutely worth the visit!"

Strange looking museum, full of pyramide associations. We were impressed by the building and it is worth the visit for that. The art collecion is mediocre, although the temporary Hokusai exhibition was interesting as it showed original prints. What put us off was the top floor where the origin of the museum becomes clear. It was built by the leader of a religious cult who had enough powers of conviction to get his followers to put up all the money to fund this museum and god knows what other idiotic ideas he had. He believed all pyramids in the world were connected so he build one in Takayama with influences from Egyptian, Aztec and Maya pyramides. Tip: the restaurant is a good place fort lunch.

This museum is amazing, full of culture and easy to get there by bus there's a bus stop in front of the entrance. We were there in weekday and didn't buy tickets in advance, it was empty. All the employees are helpful and well-trained.
