Hoshino Resort Pepper Street

4 (4269)HotelResort HotelLodgingPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Hoshino Resort Pepper Street is a charming shopping and dining district located in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture, designed to capture the essence of 19th-century New England architecture. The development was created by the Hoshino Resort group as part of their luxury resort complex, drawing inspiration from Karuizawa's historical connection to Western missionaries and foreign residents who established summer retreats in this highland area during the Meiji period (1868-1912).

The attraction serves as both a commercial center and cultural showcase, featuring red-brick buildings and Victorian-style facades that reflect Karuizawa's unique position as Japan's first international summer resort destination. The architectural design pays homage to the area's legacy as a retreat for foreign diplomats, missionaries, and wealthy Japanese families seeking cooler temperatures during hot summers.

Visitors can explore approximately 20 shops and restaurants housed in interconnected buildings that recreate a traditional American town square atmosphere. The complex includes specialty stores selling local Karuizawa products, international brands, cafes, and restaurants offering both Japanese and Western cuisine. A central courtyard provides space for seasonal events and outdoor dining. The experience emphasizes leisurely shopping and dining in a picturesque setting that contrasts sharply with typical Japanese commercial districts.

Seasonal variations significantly impact the visitor experience. Summer months (June-August) offer the most comfortable weather with temperatures averaging 20-25°C, making it peak season for the resort area. Autumn (September-November) provides spectacular foliage views with fewer crowds. Winter (December-March) transforms the area into a snow-covered wonderland, though some outdoor seating may be limited. Spring (April-May) features mild weather and emerging greenery but can be unpredictable.

The complex is located within walking distance of Hoshino Resort's luxury accommodations and connects to the resort's other facilities via shuttle service. Access from Tokyo requires taking the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Karuizawa Station (approximately 1 hour), followed by a 15-minute bus ride or taxi to the resort area. Local shuttle buses operate between major resort facilities every 20-30 minutes during peak hours. Admission to Pepper Street is free, though individual shops and restaurants set their own prices. Parking is available for visitors arriving by car via the Joshinetsu Expressway.

What other travelers are saying about Hoshino Resort Pepper Street

The hotel is totally not worthy of the price. The room is spacious while it’s quite old. And we even need to walk long way to refill the water bottle everyday. The night snack time only offers one kind of biscuit which is exactly different from the photos showing on website. As for the public bath area, the outdoor hot spring is shared by men and women on a rotating schedule, but there’s no clear information about the time slots for each which is quite confusing. If you like RISONARE hotel, I would say Atami one is way better than this one.

Great fun for a family trip. Many activities available, pool with waves and restaurant is fantastic, conbini just at the entrance is a plus. Dinner buffet is decent but not amazing. I'm not impressed with the onsen but fun if you like to interact with the local insects. Yes, it's a bit dated and maintenance could be a bit better. Expensive but worth the experience for at least once and not repeatable.

Amazing place with tons of activities for kids of all ages. We especially appreciated tree climbing, sky lessons, and the heated pool. I wish they had a better onsen, but you'll be so busy that you won't miss it. There are lots of shops around, but my favorite was a burger place just past the shopping street. Not far you can visit the Keith Haring museum. What a lovely stay

Not really a dog-friendly place... We went there together with our two dogs and stayed for two nights. On the website it was advertised as a place you can enjoy with your dogs but that isn't really true. First of all, the hotel was completely crowded with lots of children which isn't an ideal environment for most dogs. Second, there were no facilities for dogs. No dog run or anything else a dog would have enjoyed. Third, the restaurant has a table for customers with dogs but after our dog barked once (because a child was running towards it) we were told to bring our dogs back to our room. It totally makes sense that barking would annoy other customers but the restaurant was full of screaming, crying and running children which were never told to be quiet. For families it might be a good place to stay at but I don't recommend it to any dog owner. The room was very spacious but the bathroom was disappointing. Small shower and small bathtub, not really what I was expecting for the price we paid. The spa was very small considering the amount of people staying there. The hotel has a very big pool which was great for all the children there
