Inasayama Observatory stands at the summit of Mount Inasa, a 333-meter high mountain located west of Nagasaki's city center. The site has long been cherished by citizens as a landmark of Nagasaki City, and the mountaintop serves as the location for numerous television and radio transmission antennas that illuminate the summit after dark.

The observatory has gained international recognition for its spectacular views. Designated as part of the "World's New Three Most Spectacular Night Views" during the Nightscape Summit 2021 in Nagasaki alongside Monaco and Shanghai, the panorama is famously known as Nagasaki's "10 Million Dollar Night View". The night views from Mount Inasa are ranked among Japan's three best night views besides the views from Mount Hakodate and Mount Rokko. The basin-like terrain of Nagasaki creates a unique visual effect, with lights from homes and streetlights scattered up the mountainsides resembling stars on the ground.

The glass-enclosed cylindrical observation tower provides a panoramic view of Nagasaki Port and the city of Nagasaki, and on a clear day you can see as far as the Goto Islands, Unzen, and Amakusa. The multi-level facility features a rooftop viewing platform offering 360-degree views, along with a restaurant and cafe where visitors can enjoy refreshments while taking in the cityscape. The illuminated floor lighting at the observatory works together with the night view to create an atmospheric experience. During spring, the surrounding Inasayama Park showcases approximately 80,000 azaleas that bloom from late April to early May.

Visitors can access the summit through multiple transport options. The Nagasaki Ropeway operates from Fuchi Shrine Station at the mountain's base, with the five-minute ride costing 730 yen one way or 1,250 yen round trip. Alternatively, the Nagasaki Inasayama Slope Car, a monorail-style transport introduced in February 2020, runs between Inasayama Park and the summit for 300 yen one way or 500 yen round trip. Nagasaki Bus runs 1-2 buses per hour between Nagasaki Station and Inasayama bus stop for 190 yen one way, though this requires a 15-20 minute uphill walk to reach the summit.

What other travelers are saying about Inasayama Summit Observatory

Mt. Inasa offers the absolute best views of Nagasaki. The night scenery is stunning and definitely lives up to the hype! While the ropeway was a great ride, the slope car looks like a cool, modern alternative that I’d love to try on my next trip. It's a must-visit spot if you want to see the city lights sparkle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Wheelchair access is available throughout the facility. The glass observation tower features gentle slopes with handrails, and there is an elevator to reach the rooftop viewing platform. Two accessible parking spaces are available directly in front of the observation deck.

The Nagasaki Inasayama Slope Car costs 500 yen round trip and takes 8 minutes from Inasayama Park. Bus No. 5 from Nagasaki Station runs to Inasayama Bus Stop, requiring a 15-minute walk uphill to the summit. Taxis can drive directly to the summit parking area, which has 38 spaces available 24 hours with the first 20 minutes free, then 30 yen per 100 minutes.

Arriving about an hour before sunset is recommended to experience both daylight and night views. The observatory operates from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily for the ropeway and slope car, while the rooftop is accessible during 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Peak times see crowds, so early arrival is advisable.

Foggy weather can significantly reduce visibility at the observatory. Clear days allow views extending to the Goto Islands and Unzen. The glass-enclosed tower allows viewing even during windy or cold weather, though the rooftop platform is exposed to elements.

The ropeway is a 30 minutes walk from Nagasaki station. Tickets are easy to purchase at the counter. There's a beautiful shrine next to waiting area. The observatory on top of the hill shows one view towards the city, and opposite side is full of mountains. It's advisable to visit just before the sunset to enjoy the magnificent sceneries of the sunset. One can get a view of the city from the top in daylight and after illumination. There is way to walk down to Inasa-Park which I saw, some visitors opted.

Mt. Inasa Overlook offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in Nagasaki. From the summit, visitors can enjoy stunning scenery of the city, harbor, and surrounding mountains, especially during sunset and at night when the city lights create a spectacular view. The observation area is spacious, clean, and well maintained, making it comfortable to relax and take photos. It’s a must-visit spot for anyone looking to experience Nagasaki’s famous night view.

We enjoyed the rope car ride up and down the mountain, which allowed us to capture the views alongside the mountain. The weather was cool and the cafe had lovely cakes.. but the most amazing view was to be had at the top of the observatory. Arriving just before sunset means you get a better collection of the riot of colours as the sun set

You can drive to the mountaintop if you arrive before 6 p.m. (paid parking). Otherwise, you can park halfway up the mountain for free and take the cable car to the top. The observation building offers a 360-degree view. I’d say it’s my pick for the best night view in Japan.
