Iriomote Island is Japan's second-largest island in Okinawa Prefecture and the largest of the Yaeyama Islands, located approximately 400 kilometers southwest of Okinawa's main island. Covering 289 square kilometers, the island remains 90% covered by subtropical rainforest and mangrove jungles, making it one of Japan's last great wilderness areas. The island has been inhabited for centuries by the Yaeyama people, with archaeological evidence suggesting human presence dating back over 2,000 years. Its remote location kept it relatively isolated until modern times, preserving both its natural environment and traditional culture.

The island holds exceptional ecological significance as part of the Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021 as part of the Amami-Oshima Island, Tokunoshima Island, northern part of Okinawa Island, and Iriomote Island cluster. The island is home to the critically endangered Iriomote cat, a wild feline species found nowhere else on Earth, with an estimated population of only 100 individuals. The extensive mangrove forests along the Urauchi River and Nakama River are among Japan's finest, while the surrounding coral reefs support diverse marine ecosystems.

Visitors can explore the island through kayaking excursions along mangrove-lined waterways, particularly on the Urauchi River, Japan's longest navigable river in Okinawa. Jungle trekking leads to spectacular waterfalls including Pinaisara Falls and Mariyudo Falls, accessible via boat and hiking combinations. Snorkeling and diving at Barasu Island, an uninhabited coral fragment island, and Ida Beach showcase vibrant coral reefs and tropical fish. Guided night tours offer opportunities to observe rare wildlife, though sightings of the Iriomote cat remain extremely rare. The island's Yubu Island can be reached by traditional water buffalo cart, providing a unique cultural experience.

Iriomote Island is accessible only by ferry. Regular services operate from Ishigaki Island, with two main routes: ferries to Ohara Port on the island's southeast coast take approximately 40 minutes, while ferries to Uehara Port on the northwest coast take roughly 45 minutes. Ferry frequencies vary by season, with more departures during peak tourist periods. Ishigaki Island itself is reached by direct flights from major Japanese cities including Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka. The island has no admission fees for general access, though individual tour operators and activity providers charge separate fees.

What other travelers are saying about Iriomote Island, Okinawa

I didn't expect much from this island, but it turns out I really like it! It's very beautiful and unique. As Japan's newest World Heritage site since July 2021, it's definitely worth a visit! I wish I could see the yama-neko. Renting a car is a must while you're here! Just be sure not to exceed 40 km/h because of the yama-neko. Be careful!

Frequently Asked Questions

The ideal time to visit is between April and October when weather conditions are most favorable for outdoor activities like kayaking, snorkeling, and jungle trekking. Summer months from June to August offer warm temperatures perfect for water sports, though this is also typhoon season with possible weather disruptions. Winter months from November to March are cooler and drier but some tour operators may have reduced schedules. Spring and autumn provide comfortable temperatures with fewer crowds, making them excellent choices for hiking and wildlife observation.

Seeing the Iriomote cat is extremely unlikely. With only around 100 individuals remaining in the wild, these critically endangered and highly elusive nocturnal animals rarely appear to humans. Most residents have never seen one despite living on the island for years. While night tours increase your chances marginally, visitors should not expect sightings. The island does have informational centers where you can learn about conservation efforts and see photographs and exhibits about this unique species.

Renting a car is highly recommended unless you plan to join organized tours exclusively. The island spans nearly 290 square kilometers with attractions spread across significant distances, and public bus service is infrequent with limited routes connecting only major points. Taxis are scarce and expensive for longer journeys. If you want flexibility to explore beaches, trailheads, and villages independently, a rental car from either Ohara Port or Uehara Port is essential. Bicycles are an option only if you're staying in one area and have strong stamina for hilly terrain.

ATM availability is extremely limited on Iriomote Island, with machines found only at post offices in the main settlements and not all accept international cards. It's strongly advised to withdraw sufficient cash on Ishigaki Island before taking the ferry. The island has small convenience stores and local shops in villages near the ports, but options are minimal compared to urban areas. Credit cards are accepted at some hotels and larger tour operators, but many small businesses, restaurants, and guesthouses operate on cash only.

While day trips are possible, they are not ideal for experiencing the island properly. The ferry journey takes 40-45 minutes each way, and you'll need to account for ferry schedules that may limit your time on the island to 6-8 hours. Most worthwhile activities like kayaking through mangroves, hiking to waterfalls, or snorkeling tours require half-day commitments. Staying at least one night allows you to participate in sunset or night tours, explore both coastal areas more thoroughly, and experience the island's tranquil atmosphere without rushing. For a meaningful visit, two nights is recommended.

An island abundant in nature. The population is also small, and the air is clear. If you join a tour, you can also experience activities such as canoeing

Lots of choices in terms of water activities or exploring the forest on the Island. However, it is not easy to get around without a car but most car rental shops closed early in the afternoon. Difficult to get decent accommodations at reasonable price during summer season. Suitable for energetic travellers who want to do lots of exploration and sports. But probably not for those who just want a relaxed vocation.

Very unwelcoming island if you didn’t book an expensive full option trip with an agency... nobody speaks English and makes effort for that, few shops, few activities, few people, dirty beaches... Car rental is a true inferno and the bus system is very bad. I put 1 star because I cannot put a zero for this awful experience. This island is not made for people who like to plan their trip from day to day. Consider all the other yaeyama islands as a better option as no effort is made for tourism here. PS: our experience was in October
