What other travelers are saying about Kanazawa Ohi Pottery Museum
A must visit for fans of Japanese pottery when in Kanazawa. The museum had a wonderful selection of works spanning the generations and it was a treat to see Ohi XI there that day.
The gallery has a nice selection of wares for sale, but the highlight is being able to enjoy tea from a bowl of your choice from the family's collection. This was an immense honor and I was impressed by the trust they put in their visitors to use these pieces.
Very interesting experience. First you get to see all those historic teabowls made in the Ohi tradition, then you can choose one of those teabowls to have a traditional Matcha to drink from, accompanied by a sweet Wagashi. All that sitting on a beautifully made table. (Of course we were a bit naïve as to how to proceed such a delicate task, but I think we were forgiven.)
Also the staff was very pleasant. We had an interesting chat and learned a lot about Japanese culture. We highly recommend this place if you're interested in pottery, tea and/or traditions.
Beautiful museum and space, wonderful hospitality, we went in to learn more about Ohi pottery and was treated with a well curated exhibition going back to the origin of Ohi pottery. Afterwards, we were able to handle some of their original work which I find to be quite unique and interesting. Having the opportunity to meet and chat with Ohi XI made me appreciate his work even more.
If you're a keen student and collector of Japanese ceramics, this should be one of your bucket list items. Stunning museum with some items dated back to mid 17th century of feudal Japan.
Private tour with the artist was possible for my group. Extraordinary collection of the forms of tea bowls from generations of the Ohi family. Beauty, beauty, beauty.
