We really enjoyed our visit to Koko-en. The Japanese gardens are beautifully kept, and it was great to catch some of the autumn colours while walking through the different areas. The serene landscaping, with its calm lakes and colourful koi gliding through the water, made the whole place feel incredibly peaceful.
It’s a lovely spot to slow down, take in the scenery, and enjoy a quiet break from the busier parts of Himeji. Highly recommended if you appreciate traditional Japanese gardens or just want a relaxing, scenic escape.

Visited in mid-November, clearly one of the most beautiful gardens I have visited in Japan. The autumn colours were magnificent, with lots of different varieties and colours. A little too crowded, however, with some spots getting a bit congested while everyone took their photos. But it's still really worth it if you come to Himeiji, especially since it's right next to the castle and the entrance fee is really inexpensive.
Years ago we visited this beautiful garden in the day, this time we revisited in the night as there was a light up here. This garden was located on the left of the Himeji castle. We covered the Dandelion Himeji Castle lights up a night before. As such, we planned a visit to another light up in Koko-En Garden on the second night of our stay. We took a bus from the bus central & stopped opposite the garden.
The moment we stepped into the garden, it was mesmerising! We were captivated by the serenity, the lights & colours of the nature here. The reflections of the colours of lights were in the pond.
After the visit, we walked along the dark, quiet streets back to the central bus stop, passed by Himeji Castle, passed by rows of shops (most of them nearer to the castle were already closed by 9pm). Towards the malls there was an Indian restaurant, a western cafe n bistro & a convenient stall. The streets were also lighted up with Christmas lights and lingered with good mood! We had really a good time in Himeji!
Koko-en 好古園 is truly one of the most amazing gardens I have visited. The moment you step inside, the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful landscape immediately stand out. The garden is carefully designed with traditional Japanese styles, and each area has its own unique scenery, almost like walking through several different gardens in one place.
The ponds, stone paths, waterfalls, and beautifully shaped trees create a very relaxing feeling. Every corner feels well-arranged and thoughtful, and it’s easy to take your time and enjoy each view slowly. The reflections on the water are especially lovely, and the garden looks stunning in every season—whether it’s autumn colors, spring greens, or gentle winter scenery.
What I love most is how quiet and calming the garden feels. Even though it’s close to Himeji Castle, once you enter Koko-en, it feels like a peaceful world of its own. You can really enjoy nature, take beautiful photos, and simply relax.

Koko-en Garden is Must visit list if you are from Himeji Castle. Beautiful Garden! Even they not big like Okayama, garden was very great. Ambiance and “drum” corridor is must to hear.. they have small waterfall.. pine trees, and garden spot.
You can see far away Himeji castle from here. So quite and peaceful (or maybe because I came here too early?)
In my opinion its not complete visiting Castle without come to their garden. Its like one packages you can’t avoid.
Maybe best time to come here not winter, but for me, even winter place still beautiful..
