Kyoto Wazukaso is a small four-room Japanese inn located in Wazuka Town, part of the renowned Uji tea region in Kyoto Prefecture. Originally a small mountain cabin, the property was reopened as an inn in July 2017. The inn sits approximately 40 minutes from Nara City and 60-90 minutes from both Kyoto City and Osaka City, providing convenient access to major sightseeing destinations while offering an immersive rural tea country experience.

Wazuka Town has an 800-year history of tea production dating back to the Kamakura period (1192-1333), producing about half of Kyoto Prefecture's Uji tea. The tea field landscape has been registered as a Japan Heritage site for the Eight-Hundred-Year History of Japanese Tea Walk and recognized as Kyoto Prefecture's number one landscape asset. The town is home to roughly 300 tea-growing families, creating a living agricultural landscape where tea cultivation remains central to daily life.

The inn's concept centers on experiencing tea through all five senses. Guests can view the surrounding tea fields, smell tea incense burners placed throughout the building and rooms, taste course meals incorporating tea-infused dishes prepared by an experienced chef, and relax in bathtubs where tea leaves are soaked. Accommodation options include traditional Japanese rooms with tatami mats that sleep 2-4 people and contemporary Japanese-style rooms with two single beds and tatami window areas for 2 guests. The lunch course menu, priced at ¥2,888 including tax, features matcha tofu, roasted tea rice, and deep-fried tea leaves.

The inn is located at 25-5 Shishiga-guchi, Shirasu, Wazuka-town, Soraku-gun, Kyoto, 619-1222. Visitors typically take the train to Kizu Station and then taxi to the property. Meals including dinner and breakfast are included in standard stays. Check-in time is 3:00 PM and check-out is 10:00 AM. The property offers free parking and free Wi-Fi.

While staying at Kyoto Wazukaso immerses you in tea culture through its facilities and meals, visitors cannot enter the tea fields at famous spots like Ishitera as they are private property of farmers, though you can walk around them and take photographs. Wazuka's tea industry dates back over 800 years with 300 families currently producing tea, and the area produces approximately half of all Uji tea from Kyoto Prefecture. The region's climate features significant temperature differences between day and night with morning fog that protects delicate tea buds. Tea plants are evergreen, making the scenery beautiful year-round, from spring's awakening to summer's rich green, autumn's warm colors, and occasional winter snowflakes. The annual Chagenkyo Matsuri or Teatopia Festival is held on the first weekend of November, attracting over 6,000 tea enthusiasts.

The ryokan is absolutely charming. Very high standards, few rooms, away from the hustle of the city. Meals are delicious. Plenty of food to rejoice. Sometimes you even wish you had less espacially at night :) The staff is very welcoming and helpful. Every room has a small private japanese garden. My only wish was that the garden wasn’t surrounded by panels to block the view. This is very common in Japan. They value privacy a LOT. For us Westeners, having a beautiful view from the window is often so much more valuable. In the end I recommend you stay there àd explore the surroundings tea fields.
