Marumasu Nishimuraya is a long-established Kyoto yuzen workshop founded in 1905 that has been preserving the art of Kyo-Yuzen dyeing for over 100 years. The studio was established by the grandfather of traditional craftsman Yoshio Nishimura and continues to operate as both a working atelier and cultural experience center dedicated to sharing Japan's traditional textile arts with visitors from around the world.

Kyo-Yuzen dyeing was created 350 years ago during the late 17th century Genroku era by Yuzensai Miyazaki, a fan painter. This traditional Kyoto technique encompasses two main categories: hand-painted Yuzen and stencil Yuzen. The art form is characterized by bright, gorgeous colors, graceful patterns inspired by nature's beauty, and the incorporation of embroidery and gold leaf that has captivated people for more than 300 years. Kyo-Yuzen represents one of Japan's most sophisticated textile arts, with patterns that resemble painted masterpieces on fabric.

Visitors can experience the traditional dyeing art in an authentic Kyo-machiya (traditional Kyoto townhouse) that has housed the studio for over a century. The studio specializes in teaching "Surikomi Yuzen," a specific type of stencil Yuzen technique. Participants can choose from various workshop options including dyeing patterns on handkerchiefs, sensu fans, furoshiki cloths, and t-shirts, as well as learning traditional furoshiki wrapping techniques. The facility can accommodate groups of up to 250 people simultaneously, making it suitable for both individual travelers and large tour groups. The hands-on workshops are designed to be accessible to beginners while providing an authentic introduction to this centuries-old craft.

Access is convenient via a 5-7 minute walk from either Kyoto subway Karasuma-Oike Station or Nijojou-mae Station, or a 5-minute walk from the "Horikawa-Oike" Kyoto City Bus stop. The facility includes the main workshop space, MAYU shop selling original handmade Japanese goods and Kyoto souvenirs, and the Kyomachiya MAHORA Gallery for special exhibitions. Workshops require advance booking and fees vary depending on the chosen experience and group size.

I have done this workshop on my two separate trips to Japan. It's a nice way to spend 1-3 hours or longer to do some art and bring home some unique souvenirs. This place offer stencil art workshops. You can choose to do the stencil on a variety of products, such as zippered pouches, T-shirts, paper fan, bags, window noren, etc. Price varies depending on the product you choose. English instructions are provided. It's better to call and make an appointment. Great activity for all ages.

They tell you all about Yu-zen dyeing and you get to build your own keepsake. prices very depending on what your are selecting to dye. They lady instructing us spoke perfect English and was step by step helpful. I only went to humor my wife but unexpectedly had a great time. you need zero art skills (like me) and are taught step by step how to make your piece

A fun and rewarding hands-on experience! We had a great time making our own chopsticks, especially thanks to Saskia’s dedicated guidance. It wasn’t an easy task, but it was definitely worth the effort. The whole process took us around three hours, but I guess it will depend on your design and skills. Afterwards, we also painted a small chopstick bag using a traditional Japanese painting technique (water soluble colors, an interesting process) that is also taught at the shop.
