Lake Kawaguchi

Lake Kawaguchi is the most accessible and second-largest of the five lakes surrounding Mount Fuji in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. Situated at an elevation of 833 meters above sea level, the lake stretches approximately 6 kilometers in length and reaches depths of up to 15 meters. Its name derives from the Kawaguchi Asama Shrine, established in the 9th century, which historically served as a sacred site for Mount Fuji worship before climbers began their ascent.

The lake's primary significance lies in its exceptional views of Mount Fuji, particularly the iconic inverted reflection visible on calm mornings. This mirror image has become one of Japan's most photographed natural phenomena and appears on the reverse of the 1,000-yen banknote alongside cherry blossoms. The northern shore provides unobstructed panoramas of the mountain, making it a preferred location for photographers year-round. During spring, the surrounding area erupts with cherry blossoms, while autumn brings vivid foliage that frames the mountain in striking colors.

Visitors can explore the lake by rental boat or participate in seasonal activities including fishing for black bass and wakasagi. The Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum showcases European musical instruments and automated orchestras, while the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum displays intricate kimono textiles. Cable car access to Mount Tenjo offers elevated lake and mountain views from approximately 1,075 meters. The lakeside Oishi Park features seasonal flower gardens positioned for optimal Mount Fuji photography, with lavender blooming in late June and kochia bushes turning crimson in October.

The lake is located approximately 100 kilometers west of Tokyo. Direct highway buses from Shinjuku Station reach Kawaguchiko Station in roughly two hours, with fares around 2,000 yen one way. The JR Chuo Line connects to Otsuki Station, where the Fuji Excursion limited express completes the journey in one hour. Local retro-style buses circle the lake, stopping at major attractions with day passes available for 1,500 yen.

The best place! We got engaged here! It’s very walkable and bikeable, with lots of spots to take pictures of Mt. Fuji. Very nature vibes and super clean. They have boats you can ride on the lake on warmer days.

Absolutely the most scenic bike ride I have ever done. Even though it’s not the cherry blossom or snow-capped season, the view of Fuji mountain is quite spectacular from every angle along this lake.

Lake Kawaguchi or Lake Kawaguchiko as I called it offers one of the best and most picturesque views of Mt.Fuji. The lake is like serenity itself with stunning autumn foliage. I highly recommend taking the lake boat cruise that offers 20-minute excursion to the lake. You can have sn amazing view of Mt. Fuji on the boat cruise itself. Lake Kawaguchiko is a gem.
