Maimai Shisa is a specialized workshop and craft store located in Motobu-cho, Kunigami-gun, Okinawa Prefecture, where visitors can create and paint their own unique shisa lion-dogs, the iconic guardian spirits of Okinawan culture. This hands-on cultural experience center offers an authentic introduction to one of Okinawa's most beloved traditional symbols.

Shisa are mythical lion-dogs that serve as protective guardians in Okinawan folklore, traditionally placed on rooftops, gates, and entrances to ward off evil spirits. These creatures originated from Chinese lion-dogs and were introduced to the Ryukyu Kingdom centuries ago, becoming deeply embedded in local spiritual beliefs and architectural traditions. The name "shisa" derives from the Okinawan word for lion, and these guardians typically appear in pairs - one with an open mouth to scare away evil spirits and one with a closed mouth to keep good spirits inside.

At Maimai Shisa, visitors can participate in shisa painting experiences and shisa making workshops to create personalized versions of these cultural icons. The workshop specializes in creating "cute shisa" with friendly, approachable designs that differ from traditional stern-faced guardians. Unique offerings include patented wedding shisa for couples and family shisa sets that can be customized for special occasions. The experience allows participants to learn about Okinawan culture while creating a meaningful souvenir that reflects both tradition and personal creativity.

The workshop operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations required, making it an ideal spontaneous activity for tourists. Sessions typically involve selecting a pre-formed shisa figure and decorating it with colorful paints and patterns. The facility provides all necessary materials and basic instruction, making it accessible for visitors of all ages and artistic abilities.

Maimai Shisa is strategically located just a 2-minute drive from the famous Churaumi Aquarium, one of Okinawa's premier tourist destinations. This proximity makes it perfectly positioned as a complementary cultural activity for families and couples visiting the area. The workshop is easily accessible by car and serves as an excellent addition to a northern Okinawa sightseeing itinerary.

Transportation to Maimai Shisa is most convenient by rental car, which is the standard method for exploring Okinawa's attractions. The location in Motobu-cho places it within the broader Ocean Expo Park area, home to multiple attractions including the Churaumi Aquarium, Tropical Dream Center, and Emerald Beach. Public transportation options are limited in this area, making a rental car essential for most visitors. The workshop welcomes walk-in customers throughout operating hours, and the painting experience typically takes 30-60 minutes to complete depending on design complexity.

What other travelers are saying about Maimai Shisa, Okinawa

Loads of fun painting your own Shisa. You can choose from a wide variety of clay lions that you have to paint. Size and design of the lions will determine the price you pay at the end. It’s a great activity to do if it’s raining and it’s walking distance from the aquarium.

The experience was great! If your trip to churaumi aquarium is done and you still have plenty of time left in the area, its 2 min down the street of the aquarium. You can stop by here and have a great memorable time with your family and friends. Staff are very hospitable. The prices per set of the dolls vary depending on the intricacies of the base model you go for. We opted for the 50-70 dollar ones. Everything is provided for in the facility.
