Mimiura Campground

Mimiura Campground is located on Nishinoshima, one of the Oki Islands in the Sea of Japan, approximately 50 kilometers north of mainland Shimane Prefecture. The campground sits along the island's dramatic coastline, offering visitors direct access to some of Japan's most distinctive geological formations and pristine natural environments. Nishinoshima itself is part of the Daisen-Oki National Park, designated for its volcanic landscapes, sea cliffs, and unique ecosystem shaped by the island's isolation.

The Oki Islands have served as a place of exile throughout Japanese history, most notably for Emperor Go-Toba in the 13th century and Emperor Go-Daigo in the 14th century. This historical isolation has preserved traditional island culture and allowed unique flora and fauna to thrive. The surrounding waters and cliffs near Mimiura Campground showcase the powerful erosive forces of the Sea of Japan, with towering rock formations and sea caves that have become defining features of the island's geography. The area supports seabird colonies and offers glimpses of the region's maritime heritage.

Visitors to Mimiura Campground can experience coastal camping with unobstructed ocean views, explore nearby hiking trails that wind along cliff edges, and access fishing spots popular with both locals and travelers. The campground provides a base for discovering Matengai Cliff, one of the island's most photographed natural landmarks, which rises over 250 meters from the sea. Stargazing conditions are exceptional due to minimal light pollution, and the surrounding waters are clear enough for observing marine life from the shore.

Access to Nishinoshima requires ferry service from mainland Japan. The primary route departs from Sakaiminato or Shichirui Port, with journeys taking approximately 2 to 3 hours depending on the vessel and weather conditions. From the island's main port at Urago, Mimiura Campground is accessible by local bus or rental car, situated roughly 10 kilometers along the coastal road.

This beach and campsite is located in a small cove, and had a very private atmosphere. The stars were beautiful at night! There was no signal, but Wi-Fi was available, which was helpful for doing research without any problems. The shower room and changing room were next to each other but in separate spaces, which required some ingenuity when using them, but was appreciated as many campsites do not have showers. The toilets were also clean. When you check in at the tourist information center at the port, you can get garbage bags for 100 yen each if you need them.
You can register at the tourist association and camp for 1,000 yen. There's no mobile phone signal, but freee Wi-Fi is available. There are a lot of mosquitoes, and pitching a tent near the sea will attract sea lice, so be careful if you're sensitive to those. (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
We camped here for two nights during the Obon holiday in August 2022. It's a small campground right in front of the beach! The ocean is a bay, and the waves are calm, so it's great for snorkeling and letting small children play. There are toilets, and hot showers cost 100 yen for three minutes, but only a trickle. The tent sites are on grass! And it's only 1,000 yen a day, so it's cheap! I'd love to go back!
