What other travelers are saying about Miyajima Public Aquarium
I spent a better part of 2.5 hours here and took loads of pictures. I enjoyed every exhibit and moment that I was there. Definitely worth it and don’t forget to check out the live shows as well. Great for 1 person, small groups, families with kids doesn’t matter you’ll have a blast.

Miyajima Public Aquarium was a lovely stop during our trip to Japan. The animal shows ran throughout the day, and we enjoyed observing many unique animals up close. The atmosphere was calm and family-friendly, making it a pleasant break while exploring the island.
The aquarium's exhibits are just too small for their animals, it was very sad, especially for the porpoises. Porpoises are intelligent and complex mammals/dolphins. They kept three in a small tank and another one isolated in an even smaller tank that had a dimater of maybe three times it's body length (and that's being generous). Seeing the sole porpoise swimming in circles endlessly was really a dark thing to witness, and seeing the other three porpoises in their slightly bigger but still small tank was not any better.. Other exhibits were small as well, such as the moray eel, penguins and the sea lions, but I'm hoping (but not sure) that atleast the sea lions and and penguins have a space outside of their exhibit they can stretch their bodies in afterhours, but definitely the porpoises do not have that luxury. Miyajima Aquarium, please relocate the porpoises to a sanctuary!
Excellent venue! Awesome assortment of marine life and interesting displays etc with information available in English as well. Wasn't planning on heading here however when we realised it was there on our island visit day we couldn't pass it up, fantastic!
A lot of people skip this when they come to the island, don't. This aquarium has hours of things to see.
PLUS! Some kind of show or activity around every 15minutes! You won't regret it.
