Mizunosato Okutsu Lake is a man-made reservoir located in Kagamino Town, in the northern region of Okayama Prefecture, Japan. The lake was created in 1974 with the completion of the Okutsu Dam on the Yoshii River, primarily for flood control, irrigation, and water supply purposes. The dam stands at a height of 74 meters and the reservoir extends approximately 14 kilometers upstream, creating one of the largest lakes in the Chugoku region.

The area surrounding Okutsu Lake has developed into a recreational destination known for its natural beauty, particularly during the autumn season when the mountainous landscape transforms with vibrant fall foliage. The lake is set within a forested valley, offering scenic views that attract photographers and nature enthusiasts. The region is also noted for its production of high-quality wasabi, which thrives in the clean mountain water flowing from the surrounding hills.

Visitors to Okutsu Lake can enjoy activities such as boating, fishing for bass and other freshwater species, and cycling along the lakeside roads. Several observation points provide panoramic views of the reservoir and surrounding mountains. The Rainbow Okutsu Lake Bridge, a distinctive red suspension bridge spanning the lake, serves as a popular photo spot and walking route. Nearby facilities include camping grounds and accommodation options ranging from simple lodges to hot spring resorts, as the area is known for its onsen (natural hot springs).

Mizunosato Okutsu Lake is accessible by car, located approximately 60 kilometers north of Okayama City, with the journey taking around 90 minutes via Route 179. Public transportation options are limited, with infrequent bus services from Tsuyama Station on the JR Tsuyama Line taking approximately 50 minutes to reach the lake area. There is no admission fee to access the lake and its surrounding public areas, though specific facilities such as campsites or boat rentals charge separate fees.

Very scenic views of dam, lake and mountains!Nice local craft and produce shopping.Plenty of free parking and a lovely drive!
I met some very friendly staff, nice food and service. Great view, inspiring and relaxing
It's located on the way to Okutsu Gorge. There's a new, spacious parking lot and the modern Okutsu Lake Visitor Center (information center). There's a shop, restaurant, and even an outdoor sports goods store, so we recommend stopping by when you're sightseeing in Okutsu Gorge. This area offers spectacular views of the mountains and lake, and is sure to leave you feeling refreshed. From here, you can descend to the lakeside plaza where you can enjoy a variety of activities. You can get there on foot or by car.
This is a great spot to take a break while looking out at Lake Okutsu, so I stopped by on my way to the Montbell store. E-bikes are also available at the entrance, and it looks like you can rent one. Inside the building there is an information desk, souvenir shop and eat-in space, and it looks like you can also eat on the benches outside. I tried the regular and smoked flounder burger to compare, and neither was particularly impressive, but they were tasty. The three different sauces available so you can change the flavor are good. It would have been even better if the buns were a little chewier. I hope they make improvements, including in terms of value for money. By the way, the soft drink they served was refreshing and easy to drink.
