Mount Hyonosen rises to 1,510 meters along the border of Hyogo and Tottori prefectures in western Japan, making it the highest peak in the Hyonoki mountain range. The mountain has been revered since ancient times and is considered one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. Its name, meaning "icy peak," reflects the dramatic winter conditions that transform the summit into a frozen wonderland of ice-covered trees known as juhyo or ice monsters, similar to those found on Mount Zao.

The mountain holds deep spiritual significance as a training ground for shugendo mountain ascetics and features several sacred sites along its trails. The area was designated as part of Hyonosen-Ushiroyama-Nagisan Quasi-National Park in 1969, protecting its diverse ecosystems that range from beech forests at lower elevations to alpine vegetation near the summit. The region is particularly noted for its rich biodiversity, including rare plant species and the Japanese serow, a goat-antelope native to Japan.

Visitors can experience well-maintained hiking trails of varying difficulty, with the most popular route from the Hyonosen Kogen area taking approximately 3 to 4 hours to reach the summit. Winter attracts ski enthusiasts to the nearby ski resort, while the warmer months offer spectacular alpine flower displays and autumn foliage. The summit provides panoramic views extending to the Sea of Japan on clear days. Photography enthusiasts particularly favor winter visits to capture the ice-covered trees, though proper winter mountaineering equipment and experience are essential during this season.

Access to Mount Hyonosen typically begins from Yoka Station on the JR San-in Line, followed by a 60-minute bus ride to the Hyonosen Kogen area. Rental cars offer more flexibility for exploring the mountain's various trailheads. The ropeway that once served the mountain is no longer in operation, so visitors must hike from the base. There is no admission fee for accessing the mountain trails.

What other travelers are saying about Mount Hyonosen

This is the highest mountain in Hyogo Prefecture. The hiking trail is well maintained and very easy to climb. There is a wide range of courses to choose from, from beginners to experienced climbers. Although bears have apparently been spotted on occasion, there are generally a lot of climbers, so it may be safer than other mountains. I climbed the Koonokoshi Course and the Odan-ga-daira Course, which are both suitable for beginners, but I personally recommend the Koonokoshi Course. The Koonokoshi Course has a large parking lot and is a very easy road to drive on. The Odan-ga-daira Course is closer to the summit and is very easy to climb, making it suitable for beginners, but on the other hand, the road to the parking lot is incredibly narrow and in poor condition. If you go early in the morning, there is no need to worry on the way there, but on the way back, you will almost certainly run into each other at some point. There are few places to avoid, so one of you will have to back up into an area just wide enough for one car. (It's a valley where if you fall in, you're doomed.) So, if you're confident in your driving, this might be a good choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mount Hyonosen stands at 1,510 meters (4,954 feet) tall and is located on the border between Hyogo and Tottori prefectures in western Japan. It's the highest peak in Hyogo Prefecture and part of the Chugoku Mountains range, offering spectacular views of the Sea of Japan and surrounding valleys.

The most popular Mount Hyonosen hiking routes include the Chikusa trail from Hyogo side and the Wakasa trail from Tottori side. The Chikusa route takes about 3-4 hours to reach the summit and is considered moderate difficulty. Both trails offer well-marked paths through beautiful beech forests and alpine meadows with multiple rest stations along the way.

The best time to hike Mount Hyonosen is from late spring to early autumn (May to October). Summer months (July-August) offer the warmest weather and clearest trails. Autumn (September-October) provides stunning fall foliage with vibrant red and yellow leaves. Winter climbing is possible but requires advanced skills due to heavy snow and icy conditions.

For Mount Hyonosen hiking, pack sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing layers, rain gear, plenty of water, snacks, a first aid kit, and navigation tools. The weather can change quickly at higher elevations, so bring warm clothes even in summer. Check trail conditions beforehand and inform someone of your hiking plans for safety.

Yes, there are several accommodation options near Mount Hyonosen including mountain huts, ryokans, and camping grounds. The Hyonosen Natural Recreation Forest offers camping facilities and cabins. Nearby hot spring resorts in Kami Town and Shiso City provide comfortable lodging with onsen baths perfect for post-hiking relaxation.

The day after the first snow fell, I climbed the Koonokoshi course from the Hibiki no Mori parking lot. It seems to be the shortest of the several hiking trails to Mt. Hyonose. From the summit, there was a spectacular 360-degree view, with the white peak of Mt. Daisen in the distance and Mt. Oginoyama nearby, both of which were impressive. 〈Early November 2025〉

We started from Hyonosen Campers Village. The hiking trail was well maintained and easy to climb. It took about 2 hours to reach the top. There is a clean toilet at the top, which women can use with peace of mind. There are occasional rocky areas, so it's a good idea to bring hiking boots.

We started from Odan-ga-daira. This is a family course, so it was easy to climb. However, it was raining and thundering on the day we climbed, so we took our time climbing, stopping at a shelter along the way.

There was snow near the summit, so we had to be careful where we stepped. The weather was nice that day, and we could see all the way to the Sea of Japan from the summit.
