Mount Shiude, known locally as Shiudeyama, rises 352 meters above sea level on the Shonai Peninsula in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture. The mountain sits within the Seto Inland Sea National Park and has gained international recognition for its panoramic views combining coastal scenery with seasonal flora. Its name translates to "the mountain where purple clouds emerge," derived from the famous Japanese folktale of Urashima Taro, a fisherman who saved a turtle and was transported to an undersea palace. According to legend, when Urashima Taro opened a forbidden treasure box upon returning home, purple smoke escaped and formed clouds over this mountain.

The site holds archaeological significance as the location of artifacts from the Yayoi Period (approximately 300 BC to 300 AD). Local residents planted cherry trees over 60 years ago, establishing a tradition of seasonal floral displays that continues today. The mountain now features approximately 1,000 cherry trees that bloom in early April, alongside hydrangeas that appear from mid-June through late July. The cherry trees have required ongoing conservation efforts since 2019 when witches' broom disease affected the blossoms, with community donations exceeding ¥5.7 million supporting restoration work.

From the observation deck at the summit, visitors can view the island-dotted Seto Inland Sea stretching eastward, with relatively empty waters to the west and mainland Japan visible on clear days. The Great Seto Bridge becomes visible under optimal conditions. The mountaintop features a nature promenade and a café with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the seascape. The contrast between pink cherry blossoms and blue ocean waters has earned the location recognition in publications including "100 Places to See Before I Die in Japan" and features in the New York Times.

Access requires careful planning due to the mountain's remote location in rural Shikoku. The nearest train station is JR Takuma Station. Private vehicles require online booking at least three days prior, with tickets costing ¥1,750 on weekdays and ¥2,300 on weekends. Only 60 parking spaces exist at the summit, with timed entry slots lasting approximately 90 minutes.

What other travelers are saying about Mount Shiude (Shiudeyama)

One of the most scenic cafes I’ve ever visited in Japan! This hidden gem offers an absolutely stunning panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea and nearby islands. I visited during sakura season, and the cherry blossoms made the whole place feel magical. 🌸🌊 The cafe has large glass windows so you can relax with a coffee while enjoying the landscape—it’s like a live postcard. I had an iced latte, which was delicious and perfectly chilled after my Bike ride.
