Hetsumiya Shrine forms the main and most accessible component of the Munakata Taisha complex, one of three sacred shrines that collectively received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017. Located near the Tsurikawa River in Tashima, Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, this shrine enshrines Ichikishimahime-no-Kami, one of the Three Female Deities of Munakata. The shrine system has served as a place to pray for safe travel since the fourth century, originally established along the ancient sea route to Korea.

Hetsumiya is dedicated to Ichikishima Hime, a goddess whom mariners and fishermen have worshipped for centuries to ensure safety on the open seas. In modern times, the shrine is commonly visited by locals for prayers regarding safety during travel and driving. The shrine grounds feature a Main Pavilion designated as a national treasure, representing over 1,500 years of continuous worship and architectural heritage.

Visitors can explore the shrine's extensive grounds and participate in traditional Shinto practices throughout the year. The Shimpokan Museum houses an extraordinary collection of over 80,000 artifacts and national treasures, many discovered on the forbidden Okinoshima Island. These treasures were found when researchers first gained access to Okinoshima in the 1950s, revealing the site as a remarkable storehouse of historical artifacts. The museum provides crucial context for understanding the spiritual and historical significance of the entire Munakata Taisha complex.

From Fukuoka, take the JR Kagoshima Main Line to Togo Station, then board the Nishitetsu Bus to the Munakata Taisha-mae stop, requiring just a 10-minute bus ride and a 1-minute walk to reach the shrine. Buses run approximately once per hour and cost 260 yen. The shrine grounds are free to enter, while the Shimpokan Museum charges 800 yen for adults, 500 yen for high school and university students, and 400 yen for elementary and middle school students.

What other travelers are saying about Munakata Shrine Hetsumiya, Fukuoka

This shrine enshrines Ichikishimahime, one of the three goddesses enshrined at Munakata Taisha. There is a bus from Togo Station, but please note that there are few buses. I went there thinking it would be a more solemn shrine, but it was unexpectedly peaceful. To see the other two goddesses, you can go to Ninomiya and Sannomiya behind the main shrine, but it is a 10-minute bus ride from here. I recommend taking a ferry to Oshima, which is 15-25 minutes away.

Parking is free, and there's a cafe inside where you can enjoy rice cakes and tea until around 3pm. Carp swim in the pond in the garden. As we went in mid-January, they were holding a New Year's lottery. For 500 yen a go, you could win a prize along with a sacred lottery ticket. It was a beautiful shrine, and it left me feeling refreshed.

Since it's a famous place, there were no events. I thought there would be a lot of people there because it was the weekend, but there weren't any at all. Other shrines and temples hold seasonal events, and they have quite a lot... There are four types of fortune-telling slips, costing 200 yen and 100 yen. There are carp swimming in the pond, and food is sold for 100 yen. I brought my dog with me, but unfortunately, pets are not allowed. It's okay to hold him, though. The parking lot is spacious. The restrooms are clean. The automatic doors give it a modern feel.

I was glad that I was able to visit in the morning. Under the refreshing autumn sky, I was able to leisurely walk up through the trees to Takamiya. The atmosphere is truly different. There is a rest area cafe called Munakata Chayu, and the tea and dumpling set is very delicious, so I recommend it.

On February 28th, I accompanied my brother and his wife to Munakata Taisha Shrine to have their car purified. It was a beautiful, sunny day, and it already felt like spring. The building dedicated to car purifications was newly built, and the interior was spacious and smelled of wood. The room with the altar was stylish, like a music hall. The priest's blue kimono, reminiscent of a Heian-era aristocrat, and the shrine maiden's scarlet hakama were beautiful. The prayers were refreshing and had beautiful voices. 😄🎵 The priest used a purification stick with a white paper attached, and then the shrine maiden used a bell attached, and they performed the purification ritual over the three of us, swishing it over our heads. It felt like all the garbage in my brain was being cleared away. We also had our car purified in the parking lot, and it was a refreshing day. ☺️
