Murou Art Forest

4.3 (742)ParkTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Murou Art Forest is an open-air sculpture park located in Uda City, Nara Prefecture, nestled in the mountainous forests near the historic Murouji Temple. The park originated from the Muro Art Arcadia Plan launched in 1997 as a regional revitalization initiative combining art with public works. The concept was developed by local sculptor Bukichi Inoue (1930-1997), who envisioned creating a harmonious space where art and nature coexist. Following Inoue's death, renowned Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan completed the project in 2006, designing installations under the theme of harmony between nature and art.

The park spans 7.8 hectares and features 12 art installations that integrate natural elements such as sunlight, water flow, and seasonal changes into their design. Notable works include the Sun Tower, an 8-meter tall weathering steel structure functioning as a sundial, and the Spiral Canal, a winding waterway lined with smooth stones that creates a meditative atmosphere. The installations are positioned along the 34°32' north latitude line, historically associated with sun worship in Japan and shared by many temples including Murouji. Visitors can walk through, on, or around these monumental sculptures, experiencing art from multiple perspectives while surrounded by cedar forests, bamboo groves, and terraced rice fields that evoke Japan's traditional landscape.

The park offers hiking trails through dense forests and past tranquil ponds, with the entire circuit taking approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. Seasonal transformations enhance the experience, from cherry blossoms in spring to vibrant autumn foliage. The park is particularly popular as a photogenic destination where geometric modern art contrasts dramatically with organic natural surroundings. Picnic facilities are available near the visitor center, making it suitable for families and those seeking a peaceful retreat from urban life.

To reach Murou Art Forest, take the Kintetsu Railway to Muroguchiono Station, then board a bus bound for Murouji Temple and alight at the final stop. From there, the park is a 20-minute walk uphill, though the scenic forest trail can also be hiked directly from the station in approximately two hours. Admission costs ¥410 for adults and ¥200 for high school students, with free entry for junior high school students and younger. Free parking is available for visitors arriving by car.

What other travelers are saying about Murou Art Forest

A wonderful experience of immersion into art and nature. We went to Nara specifically for this place and it did not disappoint. We reached Nara via train at about 9am and were able to look at the deer and have some mochi near Nara Park and headed to Murouji by 11am. Even just the journey to place was so picturesque, it reminded me of train rides in Switzerland. And then we go to the Art Forest. Let me tell you now, this is quite a hike from the bus stop to this location if you will just walk it like we did. I’m not sure that there is an alternative, maybe by taxi or rented cars would be easier. It’s not impossible specially with the weather being already quite pleasant even after noon time. In the Art Forest, there are a lot of reminders for commuters that the last bus will leave the town by 4:40pm so that you won’t miss it. As for the Art itself, they are so beautiful in person and in photos. just do take note you would have to line up at some spots to get your IG-worthy shot. But it’s worth it!

This place is fascinating!! The place was really huge located among the nature, forests, on the mountain. A lot of spaces to hangout and picnic also! We were walking uphill to this place. It was not that far and the walking paths are quite good, not too steep. Those arts architecture has the meaning behind them. At first i didn’t understand but eventually I know the purpose of creating them related to the shadows and lights, etc. They are really beautiful! I really recommend to visit this place.

2025/11/24 Architecture in combination with autumn foliage took my breath away. Such a wonderful place to escape urban chaos. I would recommend to visit in a late morning and hang out for a couple of hours. Make sure to bring some snacks with you. Only drinks are available at the entrance vending machines.

This is a really beautiful outdoor art museum, quite different to other outdoor museums I’ve seen in Japan. It was designed by Israeli artist Dani Karavan which has a few more spots in Japan showing his art, but this definitely the best one by far. The remoteness of this place is not a disadvantage as it’s surrounded by beautiful countryside scenery and the road to get there is so nice.

I’m really glad that I still went despite seeing reviews that say it’s “not worth it” because it really was worth it. The really good weather helps of course, and I’m so appreciative of the pieces here — just beautifully done and modest. I’d definitely come back again and stay longer — probably to read and just really take nature in 🥰
