Rising majestically in the heart of Nagoya, Nagoya Castle is a stunning testament to Japan's feudal history and architectural prowess. Commissioned by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu and completed in 1615, this formidable fortress was designed to demonstrate power and authority.

The castle is renowned for its golden shachihoko, mythical tiger-fish ornaments glistening atop its roof, and expansive grounds that once served as a military stronghold. The original structures were tragically destroyed during World War II, but meticulous restorations, completed in 2018, have revived the Hommaru Palace to its former splendor using traditional materials and techniques.

Visitors can marvel at the intricate gold leaf paintings and exquisite architecture that once hosted the Owari-Tokugawa clan and even shoguns on their visits. Today, while the main keep is closed for reconstruction to meet modern safety standards, the castle remains a vibrant historical site with beautifully maintained gardens, seasonal blossoms, and fascinating exhibitions.

Explore Nagoya Castle's grandeur, immerse yourself in its rich history, and witness the legacy of the Tokugawa shogunate. Plan your visit today and return to an era of samurais and shoguns.

What other travelers are saying about Nagoya Castle

My second time visiting Nagoya Castle, and it still feels just as impressive as the first time. The castle is beautiful and full of history, and the surrounding park makes it a really nice place to walk around and take in the atmosphere. One thing I enjoyed this time was stopping by a small ice cream shop nearby — super chill and perfect for a short break after exploring the castle grounds. If you come here, don’t forget to try the Ninja ice cream. It’s fun, tasty, and kind of a must-try when you’re around Nagoya Castle.

¥500 Adult entry, discounts for students, seniors Nagoyajo Station Exit 7- the Nagoya Monument was there, a pretty fountain, pathway to the castle had rows of food stalls, cafes. Nice, breezy walk to castle gates. Shaded seating areas, souvenir shops, crows and other birds, there could be a scheduled open performance play (theatre)- it's free. Lots of photographers, you can pay for your pictures if you agree. Separate payment for entering the castle.

Beautiful place. The only part of the castle that is open to public is the Honmaru Palace in which you can enter (with shoes off) and walk to see the different rooms and segments. The Main Keep is shut off and not allowed to admit visitors since 2018 due to an earthquake that has resulted in some structural integrity issues with the building. But the exterior is still pretty and worth to take a look!

Very pretty castle and grounds. With some noisy crows! 😆 The inside of the castle was not open to visitors. Best view for photos was from the northwest corner in the afternoon. I imagine this place gets very busy in the summer, so come very early in the AM for the least crowds.

Nagoya Castle is still nice to visit even though the main castle is under renovation and not accessible at the moment. You can still walk around the grounds and enjoy the atmosphere, but it is more of a quick stop rather than a long visit. The highlight is the Hommaru Palace, which is beautifully restored and worth seeing. The artwork and interiors are impressive and give you a good sense of the castle’s history. The surrounding park area is also pleasant for a short stroll. A good place to drop by if you are already in the area and want to see one of Nagoya’s key landmarks without needing too much time.
