Nakayama Pass Lookout, Ogasawara

4.7 (84)Observation DeckTourist AttractionPoint Of InterestEstablishment

Nakayama Pass Lookout sits on Chichijima, the main inhabited island of the Ogasawara archipelago, located approximately 1,000 kilometers south of Tokyo in the North Pacific Ocean. Chichijima is one of only two inhabited islands in this UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, which was designated in 2011 for its pristine natural environment and unique biodiversity.

The lookout provides panoramic views of Chichijima's west coast, showcasing the famous Bonin Blue seas and landmarks including Kominato Beach, Buta Beach, Futami Port, and South Island. The vivid turquoise waters that characterize the Ogasawara Islands are particularly striking from this vantage point. The observatory serves as one of the island's premier viewpoints for appreciating both the coastal geography and the surrounding Pacific Ocean.

Visitors access the lookout via a relatively easy hiking trail, making it suitable for most fitness levels. The experience is best enjoyed on clear days when visibility is optimal and the full scope of the seascape can be appreciated. The site offers opportunities for photography and marine observation, particularly of the distinctive blue waters that give the region its character.

The journey to Chichijima requires a 24-hour ferry ride from Tokyo, with the Ogasawara-maru ferry departing from Takeshiba Kyakusen terminal. From Futami Port, visitors can take a bus to Kominatokaigan Bus Stop, followed by an 18-minute walk to reach the lookout. There is no admission fee to visit the lookout. The remote location and lengthy ferry journey mean visitors typically plan extended stays of several days to explore the islands.

Reaching Nakayama Pass Lookout requires traveling to Chichijima Island first. Once on the island, take a bus from Futami Port to Kominatokaigan Bus Stop, then walk approximately 18 minutes to reach the lookout. Due to the infrequent ferry schedule and lengthy journey, visitors typically plan stays of several days to explore the islands properly.

No, there is no admission fee to visit Nakayama Pass Lookout. The site is freely accessible to all visitors. However, you will need to budget for transportation costs, including the ferry to Chichijima, which ranges from approximately ¥30,000 to ¥90,000 one way depending on the cabin class you choose, and local bus transportation on the island.

The optimal time to visit the Ogasawara Islands is from mid-June to July and from March to June or September to November, when weather conditions are most stable and visibility is clear for viewing the panoramic vistas from Nakayama Pass. The summer months from August to September can be affected by typhoons. While swimming is possible until December, the winter months of January and February require wetsuits for water activities.

The trail to Nakayama Pass Lookout is considered relatively easy and suitable for most fitness levels. It doesn't require advanced hiking experience or special equipment. However, visitors should wear appropriate footwear and bring water, especially during warmer months. I stopped off on my way around the moped island. I knew I'd be walking, but it was pretty hot in midsummer! The shade from the trees was nice, but once you get up there you're in full sun. I was wearing sandals, a dress, and shorts, but the climb was no problem. It took about 20 minutes of leisurely walking. Once you've made it to the top, a spectacular view awaits! I was surprised by some crabs along the way, and there was animal droppings (what kind of animal was that??) at the top, lol But the view is spectacular!!! You should definitely climb it!!!

This observation deck is on the way to John Beach. The view is simply spectacular. It may be the best view on Chichijima. It's quite a climb, but it's worth the visit.

I think this is the best hiking trail on Chichijima, where you can look down on Kominato Beach and see Minami Island. It takes about 20 minutes of climbing to get there, and the footing is not very good. It's best to avoid sandals and shorts. Even in autumn, the heat is close to that of mainland summer, so be sure to bring something to keep you hydrated.

The view is so beautiful it's worth the trip. It takes about 15 minutes of trekking, so it can be a bit tiring for someone like me who doesn't normally climb mountains, but the view that awaits you will make any fatigue disappear.
