National Yoyogi Stadium

National Yoyogi Stadium stands as one of Tokyo's most architecturally significant sports venues, located in the Shibuya district adjacent to the expansive Yoyogi Park. Designed by renowned architect Kenzo Tange and completed in 1964 for the Tokyo Olympics, the stadium represents a masterpiece of modern Japanese architecture and engineering. The complex consists of two main structures: the First Gymnasium, with its distinctive suspended roof spanning 126 meters, and the smaller Second Gymnasium. Tange's innovative design utilized steel cables to create sweeping, tent-like roofs that were revolutionary for their time and have influenced stadium architecture worldwide.

The stadium's cultural significance extends beyond its architectural merit. As a centerpiece of Japan's first Olympic Games, it symbolized the nation's post-war recovery and emergence as a modern economic power. The First Gymnasium hosted swimming and diving events, while basketball took place in the Second Gymnasium. In 2021, the venue returned to the Olympic stage during the Tokyo 2020 Games, hosting handball competitions and demonstrating its enduring relevance. The building has been designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government, recognizing its architectural and historical value.

Visitors can appreciate the stadium's striking exterior design, characterized by its dramatic curved rooflines and innovative structural system. While access to the interior is typically limited to event days, the surrounding area offers excellent vantage points for photography and architectural study. The adjacent Yoyogi Park provides a pleasant green space for walks, and the nearby Meiji Shrine offers additional cultural exploration. The stadium continues to function as an active sports facility, hosting basketball games, concerts, and other events throughout the year.

The stadium is easily accessible via public transportation. The nearest station is Harajuku Station on the JR Yamanote Line, approximately a 5-minute walk away. Alternatively, Meiji-jingumae Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda and Fukutoshin Lines is roughly 5 minutes on foot. Yoyogi-koen Station on the Chiyoda Line provides another option. There is no general admission fee for viewing the exterior, though tickets are required for events held inside the venues.

What other travelers are saying about National Yoyogi Stadium

Went to Ayumi Hamasaki’s Countdown Live show last year and the place is amazing! What a great venue for shows, so organized and wide seats, very comfortable. And the sound inside the arena is incredible.

This is an excellent venue for volleyball matches, and it ranks among my favorites in Japan. The restroom facilities are well-maintained and can accommodate a large number of visitors. The seating arrangement, especially the super seats, is well-organized. However, on rainy days, despite its proximity to the station, reaching the venue can be quite challenging.
Had great time!!I went inside the stadium for the first time in 15 years
Da-iCE was stunning and absolutely spectacular at this arena earlier this month! It’s a very large space and they were able to set up food and goods booths outside too 🥰 there are vending machines inside but the lines can get very long. very enjoyable and pleasant venue overall!
Stunning piece of architecture - best described as poetry in concrete and steel!
