The Nikko Natural Science Museum is located in Nikko National Park in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, positioned near the scenic Lake Chuzenji at an elevation of approximately 1,270 meters. Established to educate visitors about the region's unique natural environment, the museum serves as an interpretive center for understanding the volcanic landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and geological features that define this mountainous area.

The museum's exhibits focus on the natural history of the Oku-Nikko region, showcasing the formation of Lake Chuzenji through volcanic activity, the area's flora and fauna across different elevations, and the seasonal transformations that occur throughout the year. Interactive displays explain the relationship between volcanic Mount Nantai and the surrounding environment, while dioramas recreate the habitats of local wildlife including the Japanese serow, Asian black bear, and numerous bird species. The museum also documents the region's vegetation zones, from lower montane forests to alpine plants found at higher elevations.

Visitors can explore permanent exhibitions that trace the geological evolution of Nikko's landscape over millions of years, with particular emphasis on how volcanic eruptions shaped Lake Chuzenji and the Kegon Falls. Seasonal exhibitions highlight specific aspects of the local ecosystem, such as autumn foliage patterns or winter survival strategies of regional animals. The museum includes educational films and hands-on activities suitable for families, making complex scientific concepts accessible to general audiences.

The museum is accessible from Nikko city center via the Tobu Bus bound for Chuzenji Onsen or Yumoto Onsen, requiring approximately 45 minutes of travel time. The nearest bus stop is within walking distance of the facility. Visitors typically combine a museum visit with nearby attractions including Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and the Senjogahara Marshland hiking trails. Admission fees are adults 510 yen and children 250 yen, with discounted group rates available.

Many very nicely produced videos & photos & interactive exhibits. Videos show the 4 seasons, plants and animals of Nikko. Outside and level 1 dont look great but level 2 is worth visiting especially on a very cold day. With English audio & subtitles.
Great visual experience. Located close to kegon falls and the lake chuzenji, you can get to know how the waters come from mountains to kegon falls! The museum was just reopened recently. It's only 510yen!
Great place to visit with the family and understnd the region's history and nature.
Museum with fairly modern and very informative displays and exhibits. Staff were also very welcoming and accommodating. Can be viewed for less than an hour or so, so worth checking out if you're in the area.
