What other travelers are saying about Noboribetsu Jigokudani (Hell Valley)
It’s free entry and there’s no tickets required. It’s a very unique attraction that is worthy of a visit! The sulphuric content created this yellow rocky landscape and there are mist/steam coming out of the valley. I don’t find the smell too intense but I know some other people do.
Not that hiking is prohibited during the winter so if you intend to do some hikes to see the nearby attractions as well then don’t do it in winter. However winter has its attraction though the snow covered valley looks prettier in winter than the other seasons.

It’s worth a visit but noboribetsu on the weekends is super crowded, hell valley included. Just know that going in.
The landscape is lovely and otherworldly though.
Nice place to visit. A lot of tourists buses. Abit slippery during winter. Watch out. The temperature will go up when you walk closer. It is an extremely active volcano geothermal scenic spot. Strong sulphur flavours but for me still acceptable. It is a main source of onsen Noboribetsu in Hokkaido
A must travel place in Noboribetsu! Your olfactory is struck by the sulphuric underground water, while you sight is enlightened by the volcanic scene, which is dyed variously by natural minerals and compounds. The pathway is pretty safe and convenient to walk even in the snowy days.
We visited Noboribetsu Hell Valley (Jigokudani) as part of an organized bus tour, and it was a great stop. Around 30–60 minutes is enough to walk the wooden paths, take photos, and enjoy the unique volcanic scenery. The view of the steaming rocks and colourful ground is truly impressive and gives a good sense of Hokkaido’s geothermal nature.

Visiting with a tour is very convenient since parking can be limited and the area fits well as a short stop between other sights. Definitely worth seeing once. It feels like standing on another planet or in one of the old Power Rangers Sets.
