Old Folk House Guesthouse Watoya offers visitors an authentic experience of traditional Japanese rural architecture and lifestyle in the historic village of Shirakawa-go, Gifu Prefecture. This 250-year-old gassho-zukuri farmhouse has been carefully preserved and converted into a guesthouse while maintaining its original structural elements and cultural integrity. The building represents the distinctive steep-roofed architectural style that helped mountain communities survive heavy snowfall for centuries.
The guesthouse sits within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama, recognized for its outstanding collection of traditional thatched-roof villages. Watoya provides guests with direct access to rural Japanese customs, including traditional hearth cooking, communal dining experiences, and participation in seasonal farming activities. The multi-level structure showcases historical living arrangements where families and livestock shared space during harsh winters, demonstrating remarkable adaptation to mountain climate conditions.
Visitors can participate in hands-on cultural activities including soba noodle making, traditional cooking classes using the central hearth, and guided walks through surrounding rice paddies and forests. The guesthouse offers overnight accommodation for up to 12 guests in shared tatami mat rooms with futon bedding. Meals feature locally sourced ingredients including mountain vegetables, river fish, and Hida beef prepared using traditional methods.

Access to Watoya requires traveling to Takayama Station via JR Takayama Line, then taking the Nohi Bus for approximately 50 minutes to Shirakawa-go. The nearest bus stop is Ogimachi, located 300 meters from the guesthouse. Reservations are essential and must be made in advance through the village tourism association. Overnight stays cost approximately ¥8,000-12,000 per person including traditional meals. The guesthouse operates year-round but has limited availability during peak seasons in April-May and October-November.
