Oyama Shrine stands as Kanazawa's most prominent spiritual landmark, perched on the eastern slopes of the city with commanding views over the former castle town. Established in 1599 and later rebuilt in 1873, the shrine honors Maeda Toshiie, the founding lord of the Kaga Domain who transformed Kanazawa into one of Japan's wealthiest and most culturally refined cities during the Edo period. The Maeda clan's patronage made Kanazawa a center of arts, crafts, and scholarship that rivals Kyoto in cultural heritage.

The shrine's most striking feature is its three-story gate, a unique architectural fusion completed in 1875 that blends Japanese, Chinese, and Dutch design elements. Designed by Tsuda Hidenoshin, the gate incorporates stained glass windows—an extraordinary rarity in Shinto architecture—that create ethereal light effects within the traditional structure. This eclectic style reflects the Meiji era's openness to Western influences while maintaining reverence for Japanese tradition. The gate has become an iconic symbol of Kanazawa itself.

Visitors approach through a peaceful forested pathway that provides respite from the urban surroundings. The shrine grounds contain several smaller worship halls, stone lanterns, and seasonal gardens that display cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn. Many travelers combine their visit with nearby attractions including Kenrokuen Garden and Kanazawa Castle Park, as all three sites lie within comfortable walking distance. The shrine also houses a small museum displaying artifacts related to Maeda Toshiie and the clan's history.

Oyama Shrine is located approximately 15 minutes on foot from JR Kanazawa Station, or visitors can take the Kanazawa Loop Bus to Hirosaka stop, which places them directly at the shrine entrance. City buses also serve the area frequently. Admission is free to the shrine grounds and gate, though the museum requires a small entrance fee of around 300 yen.

Love this hidden gem right outside the touristy section of the garden that is more heavily trafficked. We had a good time walking through and visiting the shrine before heading out for the day. Would definitely recommend for the tranquility of the garden and walking path.

Oyama Shrine is a quiet and pleasant stop in Kanazawa, best known for its unique Western-style gate, which makes it stand out from other shrines in Japan. The shrine is connected to beautiful garden areas, and if you keep walking a little further, you can easily reach Kanazawa Castle. It works very well as a scenic shortcut or a calm route when walking toward the castle, instead of taking the main streets. The grounds are peaceful and easy to walk through, making it a nice place to slow down for a moment while exploring the city. A great stop if you’re visiting Kenrokuen, Oyama Shrine, and Kanazawa Castle on the same route.
