Roppongi is one of Tokyo's most internationally recognized and culturally layered districts, located in Minato Ward approximately 5 kilometers southwest of the city center. It occupies a unique position in the life of the city, functioning simultaneously as one of Tokyo's premier art destinations by day and one of its most intense nightlife districts after dark.

The name Roppongi literally means "six trees", a reference to the six daimyo (feudal lords) whose estates once occupied the area during the Edo period, each associated with a tree in their family name. The district has transformed dramatically from that aristocratic past into one of the most cosmopolitan and internationally oriented neighborhoods in all of Japan.

Roppongi's reputation as an international district was established during the post-war American occupation, when the proximity of US military facilities in the surrounding area brought a large foreign community into the neighborhood.

The most significant cultural development in the district's recent history was the creation of the Roppongi Art Triangle, a concentration of three world-class art institutions within walking distance of each other that has repositioned Roppongi as one of the most important art destinations in Asia.

Mori Art Museum, located on the 52nd and 53rd floors of Mori Tower in the Roppongi Hills complex, is one of the most visited contemporary art museums in Japan. Its exhibition program focuses on international contemporary art with a particular emphasis on Asian artists, and the attached Tokyo City View observation deck offers some of the finest panoramic views over the city available anywhere.

Roppongi Hills, developed by Mori Building Company and opened in 2003, is one of the most ambitious and influential urban development projects in Tokyo's modern history.

The complex covers 11 hectares and integrates a 54-story office tower, luxury apartments, the Grand Hyatt Tokyo, shopping and dining facilities, outdoor public spaces, and the Mori Art Museum into a single self-contained urban environment.

The National Art Center Tokyo, located a short walk from the main Roppongi intersection, is the largest exhibition space in Japan with 14,000 square meters of gallery floor.

Unlike most national museums, it has no permanent collection, instead hosting a continuous rotation of large-scale exhibitions covering both Japanese and international art across its dramatically curved glass facade designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa.

21_21 Design Sight, a design museum housed in a striking low-profile building designed by architect Tadao Ando within the grounds of Tokyo Midtown, is dedicated to the exploration of design in everyday life. The museum was founded with the involvement of fashion designer Issey Miyake and presents some of the most thoughtful and creatively stimulating exhibition programming in the city.

Tokyo Midtown, opened in 2007 just north of the main Roppongi intersection, is the second major large-scale complex in the district after Roppongi Hills. It houses the Ritz-Carlton Tokyo, Suntory Museum of Art, 21_21 Design Sight, extensive shopping and dining facilities, and Midtown Garden, a beautifully maintained green space that becomes one of the finest cherry blossom viewing spots in Minato Ward every spring.

The Suntory Museum of Art, located within Tokyo Midtown, houses a distinguished collection of traditional Japanese art including lacquerware, ceramics, glass, textiles, and paintings spanning from ancient times through the Edo period.

The museum's beautifully designed interior by Kengo Kuma and its consistently high-quality exhibition program make it one of the most rewarding smaller museums in the city.

The nightlife district of Roppongi centers around the main Roppongi intersection and the streets radiating outward from it. The area contains the highest concentration of internationally oriented bars, nightclubs, and late-night restaurants in Tokyo, operating until the early hours of the morning and attracting a heavily international crowd alongside Japanese nightlife enthusiasts.

The Almond coffee shop at the main intersection, with its distinctive pink exterior, has served as the most famous meeting point in Roppongi for decades. Although its role has evolved as the neighborhood has changed, it remains one of the most recognizable landmarks at the heart of the district.

The streets south of the main intersection leading toward Azabu-Juban offer a dramatically quieter and more refined experience. Azabu-Juban is one of Tokyo's most elegant and internationally oriented residential neighborhoods, lined with quality restaurants, specialty food shops, and boutiques that cater to the diplomatic and expatriate community concentrated in the surrounding Minato Ward embassies.

Roppongi is served by Roppongi Station on both the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Toei Oedo Line, placing the district within direct reach of Shibuya, Ginza, Shinjuku, and Asakusa.

The Toei Oedo Line connection to Roppongi also serves Tokyo Midtown, while Nogizaka Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line sits adjacent to the National Art Center Tokyo at the northern edge of the district.
