What other travelers are saying about Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium
This aquarium is much more than just about salmon! We didn't expect this place would extensively explain about japan fresh water (river) habitat. It delivers so much information & showcases so many different species. Explanation in English & other languages can be read in their website (scan QR near the entrance). Very good for kids & adults!
It is Japan's first freshwater aquarium focused on salmon and cold-water species. The facility features an underground observation window that looks directly into the Chitose River, allowing visitors to watch wild salmon and fish in their natural habitat rather than in tanks. During September to November, wild salmon migrate upstream to spawn and can be observed through this window.
Mid-September through November is optimal for viewing the salmon run, with October typically showing peak activity. The aquarium operates year-round with salmon in tanks during all seasons, but autumn offers the most active wild salmon viewing through the river observation window.
1.5 to 2 hours covers the indoor tanks, river observation window, outdoor ponds, and exhibits. Families participating in feeding activities may need 2 to 3 hours.
Lake Shikotsu is 30 minutes upstream by car and offers hiking, hot springs, and boat tours. The aquarium is 25 kilometers from New Chitose Airport, convenient for layovers or trip starts. Many visitors combine it with a Lake Shikotsu excursion.
Major signage includes some English translations. The underwater viewing window and display tanks require no language comprehension. The salmon life cycle exhibits use diagrams, and the compact layout is easy to navigate without reading extensive text.
This aquarium has a very large space, but the living space provided for the animals is quite cramped.
When you look at these fish, you can’t help but feel sorry for them, because no one wants to live in a very crowded environment.
The Salmon Aquarium in Chitose is very well managed and thoughtfully designed. English subtitles and signs are available throughout the museum, which makes it easy to understand and enjoyable even for international visitors. One of the highlights is a hidden and fascinating section where you can actually see beneath the river, watching salmon swim in their natural environment. It is a unique and educational experience that feels calm and immersive. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you are curious about salmon and river ecosystems.
Very nice facility, good exhibitions, clean tanks and animals in good conditions. Very pedagogic displays and nice Christmas additions.
The possibility to look at the river is a very nice addition.
Quite a small aquarium outfit. Spent about 1.5 hrs here. We came in late Nov. River was empty. No salmon. Entrance fees for adult is 800 yen and for high schoolers 500 yen. .
