Seiken-ji Temple, Shizuoka

Seiken-ji Temple is an ancient Buddhist site located between Shimizu and Okitsu stations in Shizuoka and its origins are believed to be traced back to the 7th century. This temple sits quietly along the old Tokaido highway, surrounded by a peaceful wooded area that offers a retreat from the busier parts of the region. The grounds are home to a remarkable collection of statues depicting Buddhist saints and deities, each one worn by centuries of exposure, giving the place a unique character.

The wooden buildings of Seiken-ji Temple have been carefully maintained over the years, preserving the traditional architecture that visitors can still admire today. Inside, the vivid reds and purples of the interiors are set against the natural wood and tatami mats, creating a visually striking environment.

One of the temple's most serene spots is its Zen garden, visible from a passage at the rear of the building. This garden, largely unchanged since its creation, features mature trees that have grown from saplings planted long ago.
