Senpiro Falls is one of Yakushima Island's most recognized natural landmarks, located in the Mugio area of Kagoshima Prefecture. The waterfall plunges 60 meters down through a dramatic V-shaped granite gorge carved by the Tainoko River at the base of Mount Mocchomu. The name "Senpiro" derives from an ancient Japanese measurement system, where "hiro" means one arm's reach and "sen" means one thousand, referring to the massive 250-meter by 300-meter granite rock face adjacent to the falls that appears wide enough to accommodate 1,000 people standing with arms outstretched.

Yakushima Island, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, receives exceptional rainfall throughout the year, which feeds the waterfall and creates particularly impressive displays during and after heavy rain. The surrounding landscape features ancient Japanese cedar trees, some thousands of years old, along with dense moss-covered forest that contributes to the mystical atmosphere of the location. The combination of the towering waterfall, monolithic granite formations, and primordial forest showcases the raw geological and ecological forces that have shaped this subtropical island.

Visitors access the falls via an observation deck positioned approximately 270 meters above sea level, reached by a short walk from the parking area. The primary viewing platform offers a panoramic perspective of the entire waterfall and gorge, though the distance makes the falls appear smaller than their actual scale. A secondary observation point provides views that include both the waterfall and the Pacific Ocean coastline. The site features barrier-free promenades, restroom facilities, and a parking lot accommodating 25 vehicles. Nearby, the locally-run store Gejibeh-no-Sato sells regional specialties including tankan citrus products. The waterfall is particularly photogenic after rainfall when water volume increases dramatically.

Senpiro Falls is located approximately 32 kilometers from Miyanoura Port (49 minutes by car) and 13.3 kilometers from Anbo (23 minutes by car). The nearest airport is roughly 22 kilometers away, requiring about 32 minutes of driving. Visitors using public transportation can take a bus to stop No. 87 Tainoko, followed by a 3.3-kilometer walk (approximately 60 minutes) along a narrow mountain road to reach the observation deck. Rental cars are the most practical transportation option given the limited bus service and distance from the bus stop.

What other travelers are saying about Senpiro-no-taki Waterfall

Another amazing attraction on Yakushima. A short drive from the road and a short walk from the parking lot, this amazing view is accessible to almost anyone, including those in wheelchairs. At the viewpoint located just a short walk from the parking lot is a stunning scene with the waterfall flanked by a geologically rare smooth, steep rock face, with a backdrop of cedar forests and beautiful mountain peaks. There is a path to a bridge that takes you closer to the waterfall, which takes about 40 minutes to do according to the signs. The path does not appear to be wheelchair friendly, however. From the parking lot, you can also access a viewpoint towards the ocean. You must take a few stairs to this viewpoint. There are restrooms at this point. I highly recommend this stop during your trip to Yakushima, even if brief!

A nice waterfall that can easily be accessed via car. The carpark takes you within 200m. You need to walk about 1-2 mins to get the viewing platform. There are pathways to take you down closer as well.
Beautiful falls from a distance. The walkway going to the falls could not be accessed due to landslide. It’s a quick 10 minute visit. Nov 2024.
Impressive waterfall viewable a very short walk from the carpark. There's also 2 nearby viewing platforms that look out toward the sea. There's a small store that sells produce + souvenirs I think but it wasn't open when I visited.
View of the sea is better than the waterfall
