What other travelers are saying about Shikinaen Royal Garden
A perfect place for a slow quiet walk. Plus, it's historical! It costs $4 per person and is well worth it. The grounds are beautiful and the building are great to see and walk in. It took us about an hour and a half to see the whole thing. Just remember there's no eating or drinking inside.
The garden was constructed in 1799 during the reign of King Sho On.
The garden features a beautiful landscape with a central pond, walking paths, a variety of flora, and several historical buildings that reflect a blend of Japanese and Chinese architectural styles. The key highlight is the elegant wooden palace surrounded by the garden.
Shikinaen Royal Garden can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time to visit is during spring (March to May) when the flowers are in bloom or in autumn (September to November) when the foliage offers a beautiful display of colors.
Pleasant walk in the gardens and visit to Royal Villa.
As of February 5, 2026 there were 3-4 cherry trees in bloom, making this visit more special.
The pond and its colourfull fish, the surrounding limestone bridges, a few birds... all come together as a nice experience.
There is also a small monument, a little corner in the garden that reminds us of the WWII events and how they affected the island history :(
Jungle x landscape garden. World heritage site.
Vegetation was very interesting for me from the northern Japan. It was in the cherry blossom season (beginning of February) and I was lucky to see them and the Okinawan traditional dance performance that collided on the day.
Centrally located in Naha, this garden offers a range of interesting gardens, houses, views and a lake. Entry is via a small fee. The gardens are well maintained and managed.
