Shimanto River Sightseeing Houseboat "Yakatabune Shimanto"

Last updated Mar 29, 2026

The Shimanto River Sightseeing Houseboat "Yakatabune Shimanto" offers visitors a traditional Japanese river cruise experience along the Shimanto River in Kochi Prefecture, Shikoku. Known as Japan's "last clear stream," the Shimanto River flows 196 kilometers through pristine wilderness and has maintained its natural beauty without major dams or concrete embankments throughout its main course.

The yakatabune tradition dates back centuries in Japan, originally serving as fishing boats that evolved into floating restaurants and entertainment vessels. These flat-bottomed houseboats were designed to navigate shallow rivers while providing shelter and dining space for passengers. The Shimanto River's yakatabune service preserves this cultural heritage while showcasing one of Japan's most ecologically significant waterways.

The Shimanto River supports diverse wildlife and maintains exceptional water quality, earning recognition as a Class AA river under Japanese environmental standards. The waterway flows through rural landscapes largely unchanged by modern development, passing traditional fishing villages and ancient forests. Local residents still practice cormorant fishing and use traditional bamboo fish traps called yana, maintaining centuries-old customs.

Passengers aboard the yakatabune experience 90-minute cruises that include traditional Japanese meals featuring local river fish, mountain vegetables, and regional specialties. The boats accommodate 20-40 passengers and feature tatami mat seating areas with low tables for dining. Cruises pass beneath the river's famous chinkabashi (submersible bridges), low concrete structures designed to go underwater during floods, allowing the river's natural flow patterns to continue unchanged.

Spring brings cherry blossoms along the riverbanks and ayu sweetfish season begins in May. Summer offers the most comfortable cruising weather with lush green scenery, while autumn provides spectacular foliage from late October through November. Winter cruises operate with fewer departures and focus on seasonal cuisine including river crab and winter vegetables.

The yakatabune departs from Nakamura in Shimanto City, accessible by JR Tosa Kuroshio Railway to Nakamura Station. Regular trains connect from Kochi City in approximately 2.5 hours. Advance reservations are required, with cruises typically costing ¥4,000-8,000 depending on meal options and cruise duration. Multiple departure times operate daily from March through November, with limited winter service. The boarding dock is located 10 minutes by taxi from Nakamura Station, and some operators provide shuttle service with advance notice.

takw boat is really Interestinging , u will see how beautiful natural
We went on the "Yakatabune Nattoku" for lunch on a weekday. The name is interesting. Although it was December, the breeze was fresh and it wasn't too cold, making it a lovely day. We first headed upstream, then downstream. It was a 40-minute journey, passing under a sunken bridge and returning to the pier. The boatman was friendly and answered our questions with a bit of humor. We were able to enjoy a precious time surrounded by untouched nature.
沈下橋をくぐってくれる。 案内のおじさんは腰が低くて語り口も優しい。 隣にあるカフェはスコーンやマフィンが評判でコーヒーも美味しかった。
We were blessed with good weather and were able to spend a relaxing and wonderful time. The boatman's talk was very informative, and the lunch was delicious.
