Shin Nantaru Market, Otaru

Last updated Mar 26, 2026

Shinnantaru Market is the largest and most modern market in Otaru, featuring approximately 40 shops spread across a spacious interior. The market developed as an expansion of the original Nantaru Market when vendors needed more space to accommodate growing customer numbers. Unlike traditional Japanese markets, this facility offers a contemporary shopping environment with air conditioning and a layout resembling a large supermarket with specialty stores.

The market serves as both a local shopping destination and tourist attraction in Otaru's port city. Located near Wing Bay Otaru complex in the Chikko area, the market sits within a shopping center alongside stores like Yamada Denki and Daiso. The facility maintains a vibrant atmosphere where locals and tourists shop together, with approximately 60% local customers and 40% tourists during peak hours.

Visitors can purchase fresh Hokkaido seafood including crab, sea urchin, shrimp, scallops, and mackerel at competitive prices. The market also stocks regional produce such as asparagus, cherries, melons, and Raiden watermelon from nearby Kyowa-machi. Several dining areas within the market serve seafood bowls and local dishes. The abundance of products and lively atmosphere make window shopping an enjoyable experience even without purchasing.

The market is located at 8-11 Chikko, Otaru-shi, Hokkaido. Visitors using public transport can take the Chuou Bus on the Parute Chikkou Line and alight at Shinnantaruichibamae stop. Those arriving by car will find approximately 200 free parking spaces available. Entry to the market is free, with individual purchases at shoppers' discretion.

What other travelers are saying about Shin Nantaru Market, Otaru

Lovely place that locals patronise. I liked that the market isn’t touristy and you get quality items at reasonable prices. The stall owners are friendly and the local shoppers offer to help you pick the best vegetables. What an amazing experience. The market sells meats, fresh seafood and also ready-to-eat side dishes. There’s a small sushi restaurant next to the food hall and they serve good sushi and Chirashi Don too.

Really cheap fresh sashimi grade seafood. Bought ten large scallops for 1000 yen. Also bought 100g of sliced beef heart for 170 yen, 200g of wiener for 300 yen, eight mini eringi mushrooms for 100 yen and Cherry tomatoes for 150 yen. The scallops were fresh, sweet and firm bitey texture. The heart was tasty and tender with no gamey taste without even being seasoned. The wieners were crispy and juicy. Tomatoes were a bit sour. Mushrooms were juicy and bitey. Update March 2025 9 Frozen scallops for 1000 yen. Big bag of oysters for 1300 yen. Unagi for 1300 yen. Diced pork and minced pork for lower prices than all supermarkets. Frozen scallops still really good. Sweetness brought out by soya sauce. Oysters probably had 30 in bag. Still great taste and texture. Unagi was a bit soft texture for us.

Not many fresh seafood to offer. If you plan to walk from Minami-Otaru Station, it will take you about 20 mins. For me, I will prefer other market. 😅

Small but cosy fish market with a sushi stall. Clean and dry market. 15 mins walk from the nearest train station. Daiso on the 2nd floor above fish market.

A supermarket and Daiso make this stop convenient for all of your shopping needs. There is plenty of parking and easy access from the Sasson expressway
