Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory, Setagaya

Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory stands as the only officially recognized dessert shop by Studio Ghibli that can legally produce Totoro-shaped cream puffs. Located in Tokyo's residential Setagaya district, this charming bakery has become a pilgrimage site for fans of Hayao Miyazaki's beloved animated films since its establishment. The shop's name, meaning "White Beard," reflects the distinctive appearance of its owner, whose white hair and beard bear a striking resemblance to Studio Ghibli's founder.

The factory's cultural significance lies in its exclusive partnership with Studio Ghibli, making it the sole authorized producer of Totoro-themed pastries worldwide. The titular character of My Neighbor Totoro serves as both mascot for Studio Ghibli and one of the most iconic creations in Japanese animation. This official licensing agreement transforms a simple bakery visit into an authentic Ghibli experience, bridging the gap between animation and culinary artistry.

Visitors can experience both takeaway and café options across the establishment's two-level layout. The ground floor bakery offers Totoro cream puffs limited to 200 pieces per day, featuring various cream fillings including custard, matcha, and seasonal specialties. The custard cream and matcha cream varieties are particularly popular, with cream overflowing as customers bite into the pastry. The upstairs café provides a dedicated dining space where visitors can enjoy their treats alongside themed décor and merchandise.

The factory is located just a few minutes' walk from Setagaya-Daita Station on the Odakyu Line. Queues typically form 30 minutes before opening time, with the downstairs bakery offering faster service for takeaway purchases compared to the upstairs café seating. No admission fee is required, though individual cream puffs are priced per item. The factory also offers online ordering with delivery service within Japan, though availability is extremely limited.

What other travelers are saying about Shirohige's Cream Puff Factory, Setagaya

An absolute must-visit for any Totoro and Hayao Miyazaki fan. Tucked away in a quiet, charming neighborhood, the shop feels like stepping into a real-life Studio Ghibli scene. From the moment you arrive, the whimsical details and cozy atmosphere make it clear this place is something special. We added our names to the wait list shortly after arriving and were pleasantly surprised by how quickly we were seated upstairs. The café menu offers a lovely selection of drinks (required per person) and light fare, including coffee, tea, and seasonal beverages, along with sweet treats that perfectly complement the star of the show, the cream puffs. The Totoro-shaped cream puffs come in a variety of flavors depending on the season, and they are almost too cute to eat… almost. Each one is light, creamy, and absolutely delicious. Trust me, you can’t stop at just one. Coming earlier in the day is highly recommended, as the cream puffs are known to sell out quickly, sometimes as early as noon. The bakery is actually located on the first floor where you can pick up baked goods to go. The TOLO coffee and bakery is located on the second floor and it offers delicious pastas and other small bites. Between the charming setting, delightful treats, and magical Ghibli vibes, Shiro-Hige’s Cream Puff Shop is a memorable experience and a highlight you won’t want to miss.

I absolutely LOVED this cafe and it exceeded my expectations in the best possible way. When you step inside, there is a small takeaway shop on your left and when you go upstairs, you will find the cafe where you can sit and have a coffee and Totoro cream puff (amongst other baked goods). We got seated right away at the most charming table overlooking the entryway staircase and service was prompt and excellent throughout our visit. The cream puffs themselves were so delicious!! Sometimes with themed foods, it can be underwhelming when you actually try it. At this cafe however, you can tell the bakers take pride in crafting their pastries. We had a custard cream puff and a blueberry one with a coffee and both were divine (see pics of disassembled totoros for reference lol). It is such a happy, uplifting place to visit and it was also nice to see how happy these cute totoros made everyone, from young to old. I dream of returning here one day.
Such cute little cream puffs designed to bring about the magic of Ghibli. The store and cafe was very busy despite its remote-ish location but worth a visit. It’s not the nicest pasty you’ll taste but the cuteness is 100% worth it.
This place was so cute! I loved all of the little decorations on the shelves and adorable framed posters on the walls. It’s a small shop but there isn’t really much need for a lot of space anyway, so it’s not a big issue. The cream puffs are so cute that I almost didn’t want to eat mine at first, but when I finally took a bite I couldn’t stop because it was so delicious. I highly recommend going here if you are a Studio Gibli fan, or even if you aren’t and just happen to be in the area. Either way, you won’t regret it!
Delicious! Highly recommend showing up about 30- 45 minutes before it opens so that you can get a good spot in line. Although I got bit by a lot of bugs since it's in a foresty area - so recommend long sleeves and pants! The food was good, the desserts were so cute! You can also skip the line if you just want the cream puffs, so that is an added bonus if you don't want to wait.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can purchase Totoro cream puffs without a reservation, but the shop produces only 200 pieces per day on a first-come, first-served basis. Each customer is typically limited to a reasonable number to ensure availability for other visitors. Queues often form 30 minutes before the 10:30 opening time, so arriving early is recommended, especially on weekends and holidays.

The ground floor bakery offers faster takeaway service where you can purchase cream puffs and other baked goods to go. The upstairs café provides table seating where you can enjoy your treats in a themed environment with Studio Ghibli décor and merchandise displays. The café typically has longer wait times but offers a more immersive dining experience.

The shop offers several cream filling varieties including custard cream, matcha (green tea) cream, and seasonal specialty flavors that change throughout the year. The custard and matcha varieties are the most popular, with cream designed to overflow slightly when bitten, creating the authentic Totoro experience that fans expect.

Take the Odakyu Line to Setagaya-Daita Station. The shop is located just a few minutes' walk from the station at 5-3-1 Daita, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo. The Setagaya district is residential and quieter than central Tokyo, making it a pleasant neighborhood to explore while visiting.

The factory does offer online ordering with delivery service within Japan, but availability is extremely limited and typically sells out quickly. International shipping is not available. For visitors from outside Japan, purchasing in-person at the Tokyo location remains the most reliable way to experience these officially licensed Studio Ghibli treats.
