Tokiwa Park, Asahikawa

Tokiwa Park stands as Asahikawa's first public park, with its origins dating back to 1897 when it was initially established on Nakajima, a site positioned between the Ishikari River and the Ushibetsu River. The park's central feature, Chidorigaike Pond, was constructed between 1919 and 1923, and represents remnants of a former segment of the Ishikari River when the park area once formed an isolated island. This historical connection to the river system reflects the deep relationship between Asahikawa's development and its surrounding waterways. In 1989, the park received national recognition when it was selected as one of Japan's top 100 city parks, cementing its status as an important urban green space.

The park encompasses significant cultural attractions that enhance its appeal beyond its natural beauty. The Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art, located in the southwestern section, houses an extensive collection and regularly hosts exhibitions featuring both international and Japanese artists. The Kamikawa Shrine sits on an island within Chidorigaike Pond, offering religious amulets and performing traditional goshuin (temple seal) services. The park also contains the Central Library and the Hokkaido Learning Center Asahikawa Satellite Space on its western side, providing educational resources for residents and visitors.

Visitors to Tokiwa Park can experience diverse seasonal attractions throughout the year. The grounds feature two large ponds where swans glide, surrounded by cherry blossoms in summer and vibrant foliage in autumn, with seasonal flowers including tulips, marigolds, and scarlet sage. Activities include walking around Chidorigaike Pond, boating on the lake, and exploring the wooded areas. The park serves as the main venue for the Asahikawa Winter Festival in February, featuring snow sculptures and various winter activities. The spacious grounds provide ample space for picnics, leisurely strolls, and family recreation, making it suitable for visitors of all ages.

From Asahikawa Station, visitors can reach the park on foot in approximately 15 to 20 minutes by walking through the Asahikawa Heiwa Shopping Street. Alternatively, take the Asahikawa Denkikidou bus bound for Suehiro, which stops at the park after a 10-minute ride from the station. Entry to Tokiwa Park grounds is free, though admission fees apply for the Asahikawa Museum of Art. The park remains open throughout the year, providing a tranquil urban oasis in the heart of Hokkaido's second-largest city.
