Tsutenkaku Tower, Osaka

Tsutenkaku is a 103-meter tall observation tower located in the Shinsekai district of Osaka, Japan. Originally built in 1912, the tower was designed by architect Tachū Naitō and modeled after the Eiffel Tower, standing as a symbol of Osaka's modernization during the Meiji era. The original structure was dismantled during World War II for its steel, and the current tower was reconstructed in 1956, becoming an enduring icon of the city's post-war revival and resilience.

The tower serves as a cultural landmark representing Osaka's working-class heritage and nostalgic Showa-era atmosphere. At its base sits Shinsekai, a retro entertainment district famous for kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) and pachinko parlors that preserve the feel of mid-20th century Japan. Inside the tower, visitors encounter Billiken, the "God of Things As They Ought to Be," a smiling golden statue whose feet visitors rub for good luck. This quirky deity has become synonymous with Tsutenkaku and Osaka's playful character.

Visitors can access two observation decks offering panoramic views of Osaka. The main observation deck sits at 91 meters, while the top deck "Tip The Tsutenkaku" reaches 94.5 meters and features a see-through floor section. The tower illuminates at night with weather forecast lights—white for sunny, orange for cloudy, and blue for rainy weather. Inside, you'll find a small museum chronicling the tower's history, souvenir shops, and displays celebrating local culture and confectionery brands like Glico.

Tsutenkaku is accessible via the Ebisucho Station on the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line or Dobutsuen-mae Station on the Midosuji and Tanimachi Lines, both requiring a 5-minute walk. General admission to the observation deck costs ¥900 for adults, with an additional ¥300 for access to the top deck. Combination tickets with nearby attractions are available.

What other travelers are saying about Tsutenkaku Tower, Osaka

We took both the tower walk and jump and the short outdoor slide, the slide extends outside the building for a brief second, a short ride but pretty cool. An iconic 103-meter-tall steel lattice tower and a defining landmark of the Shinsekai district in Osaka. Often referred to as a symbol of the city's resilience and local spirit, it offers a retro-modern atmosphere that contrasts with the sleeker skyscrapers found in other parts of Japan. Observation Decks: The "Golden Observation Platform" on the 5th floor features a shrine to Billiken, while the "Tenbo Paradise" is an open-air platform at the very top for unobstructed views. The Billiken Statue: Known as the "God of Happiness" or "God of Things as They Ought to Be," this mascot is a fixture of the tower; rubbing the soles of his feet is said to bring good luck. Tower Slider: A recent addition is a 60-meter-long spiral slide that takes riders from the third floor down to the basement in about 10 seconds. Weather Beacon: The neon lights at the very top of the tower change colors to provide the weather forecast for the following day (e.g., white for sunny, orange for cloudy, and blue for rain). 1912 – The First Generation: The original tower was built as the centerpiece of Shinsekai and Luna Park. It stood 64 meters tall and was an architectural fusion, modeled after the Eiffel Tower on top and the Arc de Triomphe at its base. At the time, it was one of the tallest structures in Asia. 1943 – Dismantling for War: The first tower was severely damaged by a fire that broke out in a nearby theater. Rather than repairing it, the structure was disassembled so the steel could be used for Japan's World War II efforts. 1956 – Rebirth: Following a grassroots campaign by local residents who missed their landmark, the current tower was completed. It was designed by Tachu Naito, the renowned "Father of Towers" who also designed Tokyo Tower. Modern Era: Since its reconstruction, the tower has evolved with the city, switching from neon to energy-efficient LED lighting in 2011 and adding new attractions like the outdoor observation deck and the slide to maintain its status as a must-visit "New World" destination.

I stayed from Monday afternoon until early evening, and there were a ton of tourists. I passed the observatory around 5:10 PM, and the line was quite long. It's an iconic Osaka landmark, so I stopped by to take photos and soak up the atmosphere. (I didn't go up to the observatory.) I went to all four intersections with views of Tsutenkaku, but only the main Shinsekai shopping street was packed with people.

Visiting Tsutenkaku 通天閣 was a good and interesting experience. One of the most memorable moments is when you enter the elevator—the lights suddenly turn off and a special animation begins, making you feel like a rocket is launching. It’s a fun and unexpected touch that makes the ride up more exciting than a normal elevator. At the top, the view is nice and it’s a good place to take photos of Osaka from above. However, there isn’t a coffee shop or a place to sit and relax, so most of the time you’ll be standing while looking around and taking pictures. Even so, the atmosphere is lively and enjoyable. Overall, Tsutenkaku offers a unique experience, especially with the “rocket” elevator, and it’s an interesting spot to visit when exploring Osaka. 🚀📸✨
