Ueda Castle Park in Nagano Prefecture is a top destination for history buffs and nature enthusiasts. Built in 1583 by Sanada Masayuki, this castle earned a legendary reputation for withstanding two sieges by the mighty Tokugawa forces during the tumultuous Sengoku era.

While much of the original structure no longer stands, the preserved gates, walls, and turrets glimpse its resilient past—the park's charm changes with the seasons. Spring transforms it into a wonderland as nearly 1,000 cherry trees burst into bloom, making it a favorite spot for hanami gatherings.

In autumn, the fiery hues of Japanese maples create a picturesque setting, perfect for peaceful strolls and photography. Summer's lush greenery and winter's serene snow-covered landscape add year-round appeal.

Besides its natural beauty, Ueda Castle Park is steeped in cultural significance. Visitors can explore the Sanada Shrine, dedicated to the castle's original defenders, or dive into local history at the Ueda City Museum.

Conveniently located just a short walk from Ueda Station, the park is an accessible retreat for those seeking tranquility and a connection to Japan's storied past. Visit Ueda Castle Park and witness history and nature seamlessly come together!

What other travelers are saying about Ueda Castle Park

This free park is outstanding during the Cherry Blossom season! There are food stalls, games and drinks for the whole family! The night view of the Sakura is also amazing! We enjoyed a lot! You can walk about 10 mins to the park from the Ueda train station or take a 5min bus ride there. I’m not sure how to get back by bus. You can go up the castle turret for a fee. Clean bathrooms are available inside. There’s a souvenir shop in front of the main entrance but it closes early.

We are lucky to come today in good weather and full bloomed sakura. There are a lot of stalls and shows too. And of course many tourists from local to international. Admission is free while enjoying the full bloom sakura around the Castle. A very nice way to enjoy with family and friends ☺️

About 15 minutes walk from the train station. There are lockers near the train station so you can walk hand free. Nice stop on the way to other places. Nice park and temple grounds.

A small park with beautiful ruins of castle (a short time spent). If you’re lucky, you get to meet special samurai and ninja at the gate. Plenty of pokemon go players around the park. Found a nearby parking near the baseball stadium.
