What other travelers are saying about Ueno Farm, Asahikawa
I visited Ueno Farm’s Gnomes Garden in July and paid a ¥1,000 entrance fee - worth every yen. The gardens are styled like an English cottage garden, but with a uniquely Japanese sense of harmony and care. Winding paths, blooming flowers, and whimsical touches create a storybook atmosphere.
The entire grounds are just beautiful - lush, peaceful, and full of character. It’s the kind of place where you can slow down, breathe deeply, and feel completely transported. A must-visit for garden lovers and anyone looking for a serene escape in Hokkaido.
The garden is open from late April through late October, with different flowers blooming throughout the season. May offers colorful bulb displays and early spring flowers, while summer months (June-August) showcase the full diversity of the 2,000+ flower varieties. The farm is closed from late October through late April due to Hokkaido's harsh winter conditions.
Admission costs ¥1,000 for adults and high school students, ¥500 for junior high school students, and is free for elementary school children and younger. Return visitors receive a special benefit where one accompanying person gets half-price admission on subsequent visits.
From Sapporo, take the JR Kamui Limited Express to Asahikawa Station, then transfer to the JR Sekihoku Line to Sakuraoka Station, followed by a 15-minute walk. From Asahikawa Station directly, you can take the #666 bus (55-minute ride) or drive approximately 20 minutes from the Hokkaido Expressway Asahikawa Kita interchange.
Ueno Farm is unique as an English-style garden specifically adapted to Hokkaido's climate, created by manager Ueno Sayuki after studying gardening in England. The garden features a "Dramatic Garden" concept where the landscape changes dramatically throughout the seasons, and it serves as the starting point of the 200-kilometer Hokkaido Garden Path touring route.
Yes, the farm features NAYA Café, housed in a renovated barn that is over 70 years old. The café provides a place to rest and refresh after exploring the gardens. The farm operates from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during its open season, giving visitors ample time to enjoy both the gardens and café facilities.
1000 yen entrance fee for a really lovely stroll in a large garden. The top of the hill has a swing and it was so cute finding gnomes hidden everywhere! Such a good photo spot. It felt pretty magical.
A little out of the way if you’re taking public transport. Took me about 20minutes to walk from the nearest train station. The Gardens are really well maintained with various flower souvenirs you can get from the gift shop. There is also a hill for you to hike up to. It is rather steep, so wear grippy shoes. I completed the garden in about an hour.
Highly recommend to visit this beautiful garden. After painting the entry fee, you find yourself in a stunning well maintained garden. Then the path takes you to a more wild and steep part. Then it goes back to the well maintained area again. There are lots of pretty installations for photo opportunity. My daughter enjoyed looking for gnomes and a prize at the end was a highlight for her.
1000 yen is too expensive for what it is. Only the garden area around the entrance is kinda nice and show some maintenances, but after that it was just weeds. I went there at the end of August, some flowers were dying.
