What other travelers are saying about Unkai Terrace
This place will either be great or ordinary depending on your luck and the weather. We arrived at 0600 and there was already a queue of around 45 minutes to buy tickets and take the cable car up, so definitely plan ahead and check their website as it'll be updated with the probability of cloud formation and queue times.
Generally, the earlier the better as the clouds tend to dissipate even before 0800.
On a good day though, once you're up there it's a beautiful walk and experience to be above the clouds. You'll also get some fairly unique photos too.
The sea of clouds occurs most frequently between May and October, with June and July having the highest probability. Early morning hours just before and after sunrise provide optimal viewing conditions due to temperature inversions. The phenomenon appears on approximately 40% of operating days and depends on humidity, temperature differences, and wind patterns. No sightings can be guaranteed.
Take the JR Sekisho Line from Sapporo to Tomamu Station, a journey of approximately 90 minutes. From the station, a shuttle bus or taxi covers the remaining distance to Hoshino Resorts Tomamu in 5 to 10 minutes. At the resort, board the gondola for a 13-minute ascent to the terrace. By car, the drive from Sapporo takes approximately 2 hours, or 90 minutes from New Chitose Airport.
Day visitors can access Unkai Terrace by purchasing gondola tickets without resort accommodation. Ticket prices differ between resort guests and day visitors, with guests receiving discounted rates. Staying at the resort provides easier access to early morning gondola departures before sunrise.
No refunds or rain checks are provided if the sea of clouds does not appear. The terrace remains open with views of the Hidaka Range and surrounding Hokkaido landscape. All observation platforms and facilities remain accessible regardless of cloud conditions.
The terrace includes the Cloud Walk viewing platform, Cloud Pool reflective water feature, and Cloud Bed seating area. A café serves beverages and light refreshments. Restrooms are located at both the gondola base station and the terrace. Temperatures at 1,088 meters elevation are significantly cooler than ground level.
The gondolas open early in the morning at 5:00am, but they often operate earlier, and during busy times there is a numbered ticket system, so it is advisable to arrive by 4:00am or 4:30am at the latest if possible. I arrived at around 4:40am and the gondola was already running, numbered 101, and I was able to board the gondola at around 5:20am. The view from the cloud walk on the deck jutting out from the cliff was fantastic, not only on the tower side but also on the west side of the valley, where the cloud sea covered the whole valley.
We stayed two nights again, this time hoping to see a sea of clouds, and enjoyed a good view on the first day with clear skies ☀️. We were very happy to see a sea of clouds on the second day. The day before, the cloud sea rate was 30%, but we were super lucky. ✌️
A breathtaking experience! Even without the 'sea of clouds' (Unkai), the soft-serve ice cream shaped like a cloud is a must-try. Fantastic views and a unique spot for photos.

It opens at 5am, last cable car up is at 8am and the last cable car down is 9am so plan your sleep timing accordingly.
The weather was not the most ideal when I went there but the mist dissipate to form the sea of clouds that everyone went there for. So if you have time, do wait in the cafe. You might end up liking the experience.
The different spots are several minute walks away from each other with the rope bed, wedge deck and swing being uphill.
Also the staff stationed at the ropebed can help you take group photos.
Definitely worth the extra effort to come here.
Not too good visibility on the day of travel, and the sign to the terrace is actually not too clear, which I actually missed the spot, and thought the cable car station was all of it. the Terrace takes a 10mins walk and passes a skii area that usually overlooked under snow, but the view is absolutely stunning!
