Ushimado Beach

3.7 (349)BeachNatural FeatureEstablishment

Ushimado Beach stretches along the Seto Inland Sea in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture, earning its nickname as the "Aegean Sea of Japan" for its Mediterranean-like climate and scenic beauty. The area has historically served as a strategic maritime point, with the nearby Ushimado Port flourishing during the Edo period as a key stop for shipping routes. The town's connection to the sea remains evident in its fishing heritage and traditional boat-building culture.

The beach is renowned for its calm, shallow waters and mild year-round climate, making it particularly suitable for families and water sports enthusiasts. The coastline offers views of numerous small islands dotting the Seto Inland Sea, creating a distinctive seascape that changes with the light throughout the day. Maejima Island, connected by a 700-meter walking path accessible at low tide, stands as one of the area's most photographed natural features. The surrounding Seto Inland Sea National Park designation protects the region's ecological and scenic value.

Visitors can engage in swimming during the summer months, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding in the protected waters. The beach area includes facilities for camping and hosts annual events such as traditional boat races. The town itself maintains several art installations and galleries, reflecting the broader Setouchi art region's cultural initiatives. Fresh seafood, particularly oysters and octopus caught in local waters, features prominently in area restaurants.

Access from Okayama Station requires taking the JR Ako Line to Oku Station, followed by a 10-kilometer bus ride taking approximately 15 minutes to Ushimado. By car, the journey from Okayama takes roughly 50 minutes via Route 250. Limited parking is available near the beach, with increased availability at designated lots during peak season. The nearest accommodation options range from traditional ryokan to modern guesthouses concentrated in Ushimado town center.

What other travelers are saying about Ushimado Beach

Great beach. I found the sand and water very clean and clear. There may have been some small bits of debris in the sand, but it seemed very clean compared to Canada's beach standards! I saw two white jellyfish in the water but none of the locals were concerned so they must be harmless. Lots of families were enjoying the water. There is a public washroom nearby and beach hut restaurants that serve hot dogs, yakisoba, takoyaki, and shaved ice. You can also pay $300 yen for a shower at these restaurants. Friendly and lively atmosphere.

A nice quiet and clean little beach with good swimming in the summer, and the Ushimado Shrine up on the headland overlooking the beach and bay. There are also some summertime food/ beer vendors on the street, but i've not visited them myself. Beautiful and relaxing at sunrise and sunset especially with those long shadows!

What happened to this beach?? The amount of rubbish is unbelievable! I picked up as much as I could with a plastic bag and left. It’s a shame because I took my kids here after driving for 1 hour but it’s way too dirty. Last year it wasn’t like this
