Yakushima Lighthouse (Nagata Lighthouse)

4.2 (259)Tourist AttractionLocal Government OfficeGovernment OfficePoint Of InterestEstablishment

Yakushima Lighthouse, also known as Nagata Lighthouse, is a striking landmark on Yakushima Island. Perched on the island's northwest tip, this lighthouse has been guiding ships safely through the surrounding waters since 1950. The structure itself is simple yet iconic, standing tall against the backdrop of the sea and sky.

The location offers breathtaking views of the ocean, with waves crashing against the rocky coastline. It's a fantastic spot for watching sunsets, where the sky transforms into a palette of vibrant colors, and the lighthouse stands as a silent sentinel. The area around the lighthouse is also rich in natural beauty, with rugged cliffs and lush vegetation.

Visitors often come here not just for the views but also for the tranquil atmosphere. The lighthouse area is peaceful, providing a perfect escape from the busier parts of the island. It's also a great place to spot local wildlife, including sea birds and sometimes even turtles coming ashore.

What other travelers are saying about Yakushima Lighthouse (Nagata Lighthouse)

Typhoon from 2023 must have impacted quite a bit on the island, the whole national heritage walk is closed due to it so we are unable to visit this area to see the nature which suppose to bring the experience of seeing wild life deers and monkeys. Though we were not able to visit, decided to hop over to the lighthouse which is one of the few lighthouse in Yakushima which help with big cargo ships that is through Taipei and other parts of Japan. There is this small route that is to the right of the entrance of the nature walk that brings you to the lighthouse, to be honest, it was quite a drive for us even though we were driving a Suzuki hustler that is small enough to maneuvere, the road is very narrow and there are drainage and gaps on both sides which makes the ride all the more thrilling in the sense, I wouldn’t recommend people to drive there at night unless you are very confident with driving in the dark, we also met monkeys in the middle of the drive too, so drive slow. The lighthouse is not opened to public so we only managed to see it from afar, nevertheless the surroundings of the ocean and nature was still amazing. One tip, you will see many small areas that is for you to reverse back when you see on coming vehicles, still be careful when you do need to do it.

A very little place. The view is great in sunny days. Don't come in night time or sunset time as the road to here is very narrow.

A lone white lighthouse stands on a rocky cliff, overlooking a calm ocean at sunset. The sky is filled with moody clouds, with hints of orange and pink from the setting sun. The dark rocks contrast with the soft light of the evening sky.
