Yamashita Park stretches along Yokohama's waterfront for approximately 700 meters, making it one of Japan's first seaside public parks. Opened in 1930, the park was constructed using rubble from the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, transforming devastation into a symbol of recovery and renewal. Its location directly facing Yokohama Port established it as a vital gathering space during the city's reconstruction era.

The park's most iconic feature is the Hikawa Maru, a retired ocean liner permanently moored at the pier. This vessel operated between 1930 and 1960, carrying passengers across the Pacific to Seattle and serving as a hospital ship during World War II.

Visitors can board and explore the ship's preserved interiors, including first-class cabins and dining rooms that showcase early 20th-century maritime luxury. The adjacent Guardian of Water statue, featuring a girl and dolphin, commemorates the park's 50th anniversary and has become a popular meeting spot.

Walking through Yamashita Park offers views of the Yokohama Bay Bridge and the constant movement of container ships and harbor craft. The landscaped grounds include rose gardens that bloom seasonally, particularly striking during spring and autumn.

Benches line the promenade, providing rest points along the waterfront pathway. The park connects directly to the historic Yokohama Marine Tower and lies within walking distance of Chinatown and the Red Brick Warehouse district, making it a natural starting point for exploring Yokohama's port area.

Yamashita Park is accessible via Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minatomirai Line, requiring approximately a 3-minute walk. Alternatively, Kannai Station on the JR Negishi Line sits about 15 minutes away on foot.

The park remains open 24 hours with no admission fee, though boarding the Hikawa Maru requires a separate ticket of ¥300 for adults. Street parking is limited, but several paid parking facilities operate nearby for those arriving by car.

A nice park for an evening walk. Walked along the seaside and saw the iconic Hikawa Maru ship docked by the harbor. In distance, we spotted the glowing Minato Mirai ferris wheel

It's a beautiful place. Lots of flowers, and it has an incredible view of the sea. The air is fresh, and if you are lucky, you can see so many different birds and insects. Totally worth it.

I came to this park because it was represented in the video game "Yakuza: Like A Dragon". It looks quite similar (with a few minor differences). Even in winter when plants aren't really blooming and it's freezing cold, this park still has its beauty and charm.

I came here on my last day of my trip to Japan. Glad I did! Wonderful quiet place and with such an amazing weather, it was an enjoyable walk. Not far from central Tokyo if you take the train and it’s so soothing. Lovely!

Nice little park! Wish I could be here at night to see how this place lights up! They had a "Moveum" exhibit by Toyota, but I was a little intimidated to go in. Very beautiful park by the ocean!
