Chichibu Shrine is one of the most important Shinto shrines in Saitama Prefecture, located in the historic city of Chichibu approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. The shrine has a history spanning over 2,100 years, with its origins traditionally dated to the Kamakura period (1185-1333), though the current structures were rebuilt in 1592 during the reign of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The shrine is dedicated to several deities including Yagokoro-Omoikane-no-Mikoto, the god of wisdom and knowledge, making it a popular destination for students and those seeking guidance.

The shrine complex is renowned for its exceptional Edo-period architecture, particularly the ornate main hall which features intricate carvings of animals and mythological creatures. The famous "Tsunagi-no-Ryu" (Chained Dragon) carving by legendary sculptor Hidari Jingoro adorns the shrine, created with such lifelike detail that legend claims it had to be chained to prevent it from flying to a nearby pond. The colorful decorations and elaborate wooden carvings showcase the pinnacle of early modern Japanese craftsmanship.

Visitors can explore the shrine grounds freely, observing traditional Shinto rituals and architecture within a peaceful forested setting. The shrine is particularly famous for hosting the Chichibu Yomatsuri (Chichibu Night Festival) every December 2nd and 3rd, one of Japan's three greatest float festivals featuring elaborate illuminated floats and fireworks. Throughout the year, visitors can purchase protective amulets, receive traditional prayers, and participate in seasonal festivals. The surrounding area includes traditional shops and restaurants serving local Chichibu specialties.

The shrine is accessible by taking the Seibu Chichibu Line from Ikebukuro Station in Tokyo to Seibu-Chichibu Station, a journey of approximately 80 minutes. From the station, the shrine is a 15-minute walk through the town center. Alternatively, visitors can take the Chichibu Railway to Chichibu Station, which is slightly closer. Ample parking is available for those traveling by car via the Kanetsu Expressway.

What other travelers are saying about Chichibu Shrine

This shrine near Chichibu Station was rebuilt by Tokugawa Ieyasu. A spring from Chichibu flows through the shrine grounds, and there is an interesting water fortune-telling ceremony in which characters appear when the shrine is dipped in the water. There is also an objet d'art lurking at the bottom of the clear water in the hand-watering basin. The four sides of the main shrine are decorated with magnificent carvings, and visitors can enjoy walking around the main shrine after praying. Among them is a parent's guide to child rearing, "Do not let the baby out of your skin," inscribed with the words, "A child is a treasure, a tiger for raising children," by the Edo period master craftsman Jingoro Sa. Don't let go of your infant's hand. Keep your eyes on the child. Don't let go of your heart to the young.
