Hiruzen Plateau Bicycle Path, Maniwa

4.4 (19)Cycling ParkSports Activity LocationPoint Of InterestEstablishment

The Hiruzen Plateau Bicycle Path stretches through one of the leading highland resort areas in western Japan, located on the border between Okayama and Tottori Prefectures. The plateau sits at an elevation between 500 to 600 meters and forms part of the Daisen-Oki National Park. Hiruzen was one of the first places in Japan to build extensive bicycle paths, establishing itself as a pioneer in environmentally conscious tourism infrastructure.

The cycling path forms a well-maintained loop of approximately 29 to 30 kilometers around the plateau, offering idyllic scenery while overlooking Hiruzen Sanza and Mt. Daisen. The route passes through diverse landscapes including hills, pastures, fields and river areas, with seasonal flowers along the way. The path features well-maintained asphalt suitable for comfortable cycling, though riders should note there are some hilly sections in the northern portions of the trail.

Cyclists can explore numerous attractions along the route, including Hiruzen Jersey Land, where Jersey cows graze on the flanks of Mt. Kami-Hiruzen, and the Shiogama cold mineral spring, recognized as one of Japan's 100 famous springs with a constant water temperature of 10 degrees Celsius year-round. The Hiruzen Herb Garden showcases around 200 varieties of herbs and around 10,000 plants. Visitors can also enjoy local specialties such as Hiruzen Yakisoba (noodles stir-fried in miso-based sauce) and Jingisukan (grilled lamb), while Jersey milk ice cream remains popular throughout the year.

The climate unique to the highlands, especially from spring to early summer, is ideal for cycling. Bicycle rental services are available at multiple locations around the plateau, with various options including standard bikes, mountain bikes, and electric-assist bicycles to handle the hillier terrain. The GREENable HIRUZEN facility, designed by architect Kengo Kuma, serves as a modern cycling center where visitors can rent bicycles and learn about sustainability initiatives.

To reach the area by public transportation, take the JR Tsuyama Line from Okayama Station to Chugoku-Katsuyama Station (approximately 2 hours 30 minutes). From there, board the Maniwa City Community bus ("Maniwa-kun") to Hiruzen Kogen (approximately 75 to 80 minutes). The bicycle path itself is free to use, with rental fees varying by location and bicycle type.

What other travelers are saying about Hiruzen Plateau Bicycle Path, Maniwa

I used this road when walking back from the Kami-Hiruzen trailhead to the Shimo-Hiruzen trailhead after hiking the Hiruzen mountain range. It's a valuable road that allows safe travel not only for bicycle riders and cyclists, but also for hikers, trail runners, and general runners. I'm grateful that such a wonderful road exists. There's more shade than on the motorway, which is especially appreciated in the summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

The complete loop around the Hiruzen Plateau Bicycle Path is approximately 29 to 30 kilometers long. Most cyclists can complete the full circuit in 3 to 4 hours, though this varies depending on fitness level, number of stops, and whether you're riding a standard or electric-assist bicycle. The northern portions of the trail include some hilly sections that may require additional time, particularly for less experienced cyclists. Many visitors choose to take breaks at attractions along the route such as Jersey Land, the Herb Garden, or local restaurants, which can extend the total journey to a half-day or full-day excursion.

The climate unique to the highlands, especially from spring to early summer, is ideal for cycling. The optimal months are April through early June when temperatures are comfortable and the plateau features seasonal flowers in bloom. Late September through November also offers excellent conditions with pleasant autumn weather and vibrant fall foliage. Summer months can be warm but are manageable due to the highland elevation. Winter cycling is possible but less popular due to colder temperatures. It's advisable to check weather conditions before your visit, as highland weather can change unexpectedly.

Yes, the path is generally family-friendly, though parents should consider a few factors. The well-maintained asphalt surface makes cycling comfortable for children with basic riding skills. However, the northern sections include some hilly terrain that may be challenging for younger or less experienced riders. Electric-assist bicycles are available at rental locations, which can help families tackle the hillier portions together. The route's length of nearly 30 kilometers may be too long for young children to complete in one go, but families can opt for shorter sections between attractions. Multiple rest stops, attractions with child-friendly activities (like Jersey Land with its grazing cows), and local food options make it easy to break up the ride with frequent stops.

Bicycle rental costs vary by location and bicycle type around the Hiruzen Plateau. Based on typical rates at Japanese highland cycling destinations, standard city bikes generally cost between ¥1,000 to ¥1,500 per day, while electric-assist bicycles typically range from ¥1,500 to ¥2,000 per day. Mountain bikes and road bikes, when available, may cost slightly more. Some rental locations offer hourly rates as an alternative to full-day rentals. The bicycle path itself is free to use. Rental facilities are available at multiple locations including the GREENable HIRUZEN facility and near Hiruzen Hills Hotel, and most shops provide helmets and basic maps with the rental.

Yes, visitors are welcome to bring their own bicycles to the Hiruzen Plateau Bicycle Path. The path is open to cyclists of all types including road bikes, mountain bikes, and electric-assist bicycles. There are no admission fees or permits required to use the cycling path. However, cyclists should be prepared for the hilly northern sections and ensure their bicycles are in good working condition before starting the route. Standard cycling safety rules apply: stay on the designated path, be courteous to other cyclists and pedestrians, and follow any posted signage. If you're traveling by public transportation with your own bicycle, check with the bus company regarding their bicycle transport policies, as some may require disassembly or have size restrictions.

It's a bicycle-only road with a circumference of about 30km. There are some intersections with public roads, but there are generally traffic lights or crosswalks, so you can ride safely. There are some ups and downs here and there, but it's basically flat. It's suitable for beginners, and you can take shortcuts along the way to finish. We rode for two hours, then took a shortcut, finishing in about 20km in total, in two and a half hours! Still, it felt great and was a great workout!!

Although it's a cycling road, I used it for walking as well. It was an incredibly easy course, and it felt like I was walking in Hokkaido, which was really nice. It might snow in winter, but I think it's a great course in other seasons.

We completed the 30km course in 5 hours on a sunny day with our 10-year-old child. The rest areas along the way only had a map of the cycling course and benches, no vending machines. Once you leave the area lined with convenience stores and Jersey Land, there are no places to buy drinks for a while, so be careful. We saw caterpillars crossing the course at incredible speeds countless times. At first, I thought, "Oh! Caterpillars!", but I saw so many of them I got used to it, haha. The sense of accomplishment after completing the course is addictive. I'd like to try again.
