TAKAO 599 MUSEUM sits at the foot of Mount Takao, a 599-meter peak in Hachioji, western Tokyo, that attracts approximately 3 million visitors annually, making it one of the world's most visited mountains. Mount Takao has been considered sacred since the Edo period and lies at the borderline between warm-temperature and cool-temperature zones, creating a unique environment where plants from both zones flourish. The mountain is home to more than 1,500 types of plants, over 60 species of birds, and 30 animal species. Mount Takao is one of Japan's three major insect habitats, along with Mount Minoo in Osaka and Mount Kibune in Kyoto, with thousands of insect species documented.

The museum opened as a free-entry venue designed to showcase the mountain's natural attractions and foster community engagement. The first floor features the Nature Wall, where taxidermied animals are displayed against a projection mapping backdrop that illustrates the forest through seasonal changes. Animals on display include the Japanese macaque (snow monkey), Japanese wild boar, and badger. The Nature Collection in the main hall presents wildflowers and insects preserved in acrylic resin. Projection mapping shows run every hour, lasting approximately seven minutes, and feature dynamic imagery and music.

The museum provides practical information for hikers, including climbing routes, seasonal highlights, and emergency alerts such as road closures. Hands-on educational activities are available for children. The on-site café features tables and chairs made from wood sourced from the Tama region, with Wi-Fi access available. Outside, the lawn area features the 599 BENCH, a photo-worthy monument shaped like the museum's name, and a pond where children can enjoy water play. A shop sells nature-themed goods and souvenirs.

The museum is located four minutes on foot from Takaosanguchi Station on the Keio Line. Admission to the museum is free. The museum does not have parking facilities. Visitors are expected to take their trash home with them, and loud activities or noise that may disturb others are prohibited.

What other travelers are saying about Takao 599 Museum

I was absolutely horrified with this museum. The curators should re-think the exhibits. The museum is full of DEAD taxidermied or preserved specimens--animals, plants, and fungi. The three or four living animals are in sad, plastic aquariums completely devoid of any enrichment. Just water and maybe a rock or two. I hope the animals weren't killed specifically for this exhibit. The area is so incredibly beautiful. It would be such a better experience if visitors would be educated on they types of habitat they will encounter, and were organisms would be found within. The live specimens should be released or at least kept in better conditions. They're sentient beings, not objects.

Went to the cafe for a quick coffee break. The place was elegant and a great stopover. I wish I had more time to view the museum also.

I really enjoyed this small, free, very modern looking museum. Displays of the different types of animals that can be found on Mount Takao. Cases filled with different insects. A short video presentation on the hour. One small stamp at the entryway.

A beautiful museum which has been curated carefully. The displays are gorgeous. It is a great spot to rest in busy Takao area. There is also a small shop with very cool gifts- the funds also contribute to the museum!
