Homangu Kamado Shrine (宝満宮竈門神社) stands as one of Fukuoka Prefecture's most spiritually significant sites, located at the base of the sacred Mount Homan in Dazaifu City. The shrine was founded in 644, establishing over 1,350 years of continuous religious practice. This 829-meter mountain has been worshipped from ancient times as the home of kami, deities of the Shinto faith.

The shrine is dedicated to mythical goddess Tamayori Hime no Mikoto, the 15th emperial ruler of Japan, Emperor Oujin, and his mother, Empress Jinugu. It enshrines Tamayori-hime, who has been worshipped as a kami (Shinto god) of marriage since ancient times. Kamado Shrine in Dazaifu City in Fukuoka Prefecture is famous for the god of "Enmusubi" that brings good relationships and marriage, so the threads with a small charm sold at the shrine are popular as a love amulet.

The shrine has gained international recognition as a real-world inspiration for the popular anime "Demon Slayer," sharing its name with the series' protagonist Kamado Tanjiro. Demon Slayer's creator, Koyoharu Gotoge, is from Fukuoka, and with Daizaifu boasting the most famous array of shrines and temples in the prefecture, this connection has drawn anime enthusiasts from around the world alongside traditional pilgrims.

Visitors experience a challenging but rewarding journey through abundant natural green scenery up the mountainside. Kamado Shrine is a great spot for viewing cherry blossoms in the spring and foliage in the fall. Homangu Kamado Shrine is also a famous place for cherry blossoms and red coloring of leaves and many seasonal festivals are organized there, making it particularly spectacular during these seasons. The shrine offers a unique collection of protective charms and amulets, with marriage-related omamori being especially popular among couples and those seeking romantic partnerships.

From Dazaifu Station on the Nishitetsu Dazaifu Line, visitors can take a community bus for approximately 10 minutes to reach the shrine. The bus was not frequent - about two per hour so please check the timetable. Alternatively, the shrine is accessible by a 25-30 minute uphill walk from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine or a 40-minute walk directly from Dazaifu Station for those preferring the scenic mountain approach. The shrine maintains free admission and is open year-round. Visitors should plan for moderate physical exertion due to the mountain location and prepare for seasonal weather variations.

A very beautiful, quiet, and peaceful temple. However, the many Chinese tourists who come here because of the popularity of popular anime should be more respectful to other visitors. A stunning shop with a variety of omamori and other goods! The couple omikuji there is another level of visual perfection 😍 Very clean, beautiful, and most importantly, there's a stunning view down the street. One thing to keep in mind: check the bus schedule and arrive early, as many people walk there and, when exhausted, take the bus back, which can be very crowded.

Peaceful shrine with a souvenir shop with some fun charms I had not seen in other similar places. As a Demon Slayer fan I was amazed at the drawings of the characters :) I bet the gardens around the shrine are beautiful during fall.

Kamado Shrine is a peaceful, beautifully maintained spot with flowing water, a small waterfall, and sweeping views of the surrounding area. I can only imagine how stunning it must be when the cherry blossoms bloom or the maple leaves turn deep red in autumn. The one thing that could take it to the next level? Swapping out the gift shop for a quiet café where you could sit with a cup of tea and take in the view from the balcony. That would make the experience near perfect.

Very peaceful with a beautiful view. I went in early December, and the leaves were just starting to change color — a calm and lovely atmosphere.
